The soft pencil on the coat certainly works very effectively, Lewis. The character is amazing.

Mission accomplished . Look forward to seeing the follow up painting.

Brilliant, not sure what else to say.

Great job Lewis. Really effective result all over. The jacket is great.

It's worked out rather well Lewis,i think the coat has a look of suede leather when it's gone dirty, 😀

Great result Lewis! The jacket has collected what you would expect to find from a life on the seas.

Great effect, Lewis I look forward to seeing more of it

Thanks very much to everybody for the feedback. It was quite an interesting experiment, the jacket took very little time to paint.

Have a go at Captain Ahab - and Moby Dick. Not that I'm trying to rush you on at all.... By the way, have you tried carbon pencil under watercolour wash? I seem to remember finding that an interesting experience, and it too can give you a nice dirty feel.

A very effective result Lewis, it looks great.

You got the effect Lewis.

His hat looks almost like it's made of rusty metal. I like all the effects you created. Thanks for the insight into how it all came about. Always very educational.

This follows on from my post yesterday, where I painted watercolour over a pencil drawing. Somebody said (David I think), it might make the softer pencil work dirty. It did...4b upwards. However this sketch is to try to use that effect...I wanted the make his coat look grubby.
