A beautiful painting Ken. So soulful looking!

Ralph is gorgeous. Such a clever painting Ken.

so lovely ken you certainly have emphesised his cuteness

What a gorgeous painting of a gorgeous little dog Ken. A difficult angle but you have mastered it so well. Beautiful work.

I like this a lot Ken and especially appreciate your comments and rationale. Did you stock up on blue black when you heard it was being discontinued? Is there not a close alternative? Indigo perhaps? Nowadays, there's a hue and cry, when a pigment is withdrawn eg cadmiums.

Wonderful painting! I would not be able to say no to that little face!

This is a Golden Labrador puppy, Ralph, who belongs to my son and daughter-in-law. At the time of writing Ralph is a mere 12 weeks old. My wife and I sometimes “babysit” him. I can tell you, he’s a handful! I’ve painted the pup the way I often see him – sitting down, looking up at me with big, soulful eyes, hoping I’ll play with him or give him a treat. I was aiming to emphasise his cuteness, so I kept the treatment very simple and omitted the floor. However, you might notice there’s a hint of bluish shadow under Ralph’s nose, just to help “lift” his head. I mostly kept to three colours: Raw Sienna, Gold Ochre and Blue Black. On a technical note, Winsor & Newton discontinued that last colour long ago from their watercolour range, but I still have 2 or 3 tubes. I don’t paint animals much, but Ralph is a special case.
