Newhaven Fishing Boat

This is great! A good re-visit, full of colour

Great painting, Ken - the bright colours really do contrast well with the darker background...

Nice when you come back to something and finish it off, feeling rather satisfied. The boat lifts everything. If you don't mind me saying Ken, how about a few warmer tints here and there in the darkness, to link it all together?

The boat and it's reflection work very well, the background is just that, it should be 'boring' to allow the 'ballet dancer' to shine.

Like the composition. The bright boat against the greys looks good :)

Great water and reflections Ken.

I love the contrast between the lovely bright boat and the dark harbour wall and water. Great reflections too. I know Newhaven well - I'm going to the restaurant there tomorrow. Will look out for this boat!

Love the reflections ... and how the brightly colored boat stands out against the drab background.

I like the way the boat stands out against the dark harbour wall.

I know there's a Newhaven in Sussex, but this one is a small harbour in Edinburgh. I started this painting 4 weeks ago and quickly painted in the background and the water left and right of the fishing boat. When I'd done that, with the boat and the area for its reflections still left as white paper, I felt the piece was too dark, gloomy and oppressive, so I put it aside. I came back to it yesterday, decided I could do something with it after all and completed the boat and reflections. Fortunately the bright colours gave the painting a real lift overcoming (I think!) the drabness of the background.
