Love this Fiona and what a wonderful narrative. I can imagine this tree covered in your earthy findings!

Cor! where did you find this one I thought you had painters block lovely, great story too more please David Harrison

Really lovely Fiona! Never heard of a Clootie tree, what a wonderful name and description.

I love clootie trees Fiona, there is a famous one on the Black Isle which I always loved seeing when I was that way on holiday. You are so lucky to have one in your garden and this is a super painting of it. Not overdone at all with just the few flashes of colour representing the coloured ribbons.

Great to see your unmistakable pen work again Fiona and superb as ever, love your minimilst pallet as always so effective, I really admire your pen work, nice one.

Thanks Karen! David I forced myself this afternoon..lol It's been raining here so I cheated and did it from the window...again! Thank you. Thanks Christine, there is lots of info on google if you want a good description. You're very kind Malcolm, thank you very much.

Lucky you Val! I've seen photo's of the one on the Black Isle, mine is nowhere near as covered as that one....yet! lol The wind and weather take their toll on the ribbons and rags, so it's a constant replacement......plus it's only myself and a few friends that add to it. Thanks very much for your comment Val.

Lovely wild image Fiona done with gusto lovely

Lovely pen work and a very attractive piece of work Fiona.

I knew this was yours before your name appeared as I scrolled down. Lovely narrative as someone has said, and also those pen swirls are brilliant.

3 words lovely lovely lovely

Beautiful pen marks Fiona, very nice image too. I remember your St Ninian's well from last year:)

Love this twiggy painting, and the sky working so well with your chosen paper.

I like all the wispy bits in this Fiona. Interesting story.

I love your pen work. You know just the right amount of wash and a perfectly complimentary value. Love the idea of the tree too Diana

You keep coming up with these gems and this as good as any . Love the idea of the clootie tree - it puts me in mind of the handkerchief tree in Paphos near to our apartment where the locals hang strips of cloth for good luck.

Nice work Fiona, an expressive work.

Lovely expressive painting, Fiona (and very interesting info. to go with it!)

And I just associated "clootie" with a pudding! Lovely back story to this Fiona, lovely tangled marks too.

Wow, Fiona you've excelled yourself with this piece, both the narrative and the painting are great. Love it when a painting has a story with it. As for the painting... The pen work, has freshness and a lovely loose feel to it, the limited palette again is judged perfectly. The ribbons adding tiny splashes of colour, could see this adorning a book or journal. Lovely.

Thank you all ever so much for your super comments, they really are very much appreciated.X

Some really delicious calligraphy marks showing through Fiona, you've really excelled on this one.

Brimming with life and atmosphere. I just love the wonderful sense of movement throughout this scene. It's superb, Fiona!

Lovely dynamic painting ! A great story too.

Lovely story and lovely painting Fiona! Would love to see it in real life.

Thank you very much Alan, Seok, Avril and Satu for your super comments.

I just love your pen and wash paintings, Fiona.

Thanks very much Jennifer!

Extraordinary painting.

Thank you Luis.

A super sketch and another fine example of your amazing versatility. Thanks for your kind comment on my Bason Bridge which is only just down the road from Rich's Cider. I'm a bit concerned though Fiona about your interest in our local alcoholic provision. Shouldn't you be concentrating on scotch? Best wishes, Terry.

Pen & wash 16"x12" At the bottom of the paddock is St Ninian's well, which you can't actually see because it's now only a large stone slab under brambles and gorse. I did a watercolour of St. Ninian's bridge, which is behind the well, last year but I've left it out in this one. Both are on the route that pilgrims would have walked/traveled to Whithorn and the Isle of Whithorn which is one of the earliest sites of Christianity in this part of Scotland. The 'clootie tree' would have been and still is in some parts of Scotland, close to a well or spring and would be decorated by pilgrims and travelers with strips of cloth/rags (clootie) as an offering. Check google for more info. I still tie ribbons and anything I dig up in the garden ie old spoons, horseshoes, bits of pottery etc to the tree. I've only added a few rags to this one but it's actually covered in bits and pieces...lol.
