Forgot to add, oil on board 24" x 16"

This works well Fiona, I like the long undulating branches of the foreground tree, I find that hard in oils. The path leads us gently into the distance and the smaller trees and the background hills or wood. The foreground shadows add to the scene too.

Very well handled Fiona a lovely painting

Lovely atmosphere - and spring hasn't sprung yet !

Ah, you're using oils now and with good result. There's definitely a feeling of sunlight coming through the trees and I like the way you've boldly painted the greens.

Wow. You have worked out how to use oils now too. You are right. The shadows just makes it come to life.

This has just that feel of early Spring sunshine, a little thin and slightly cool. Good foreground tree too!

Lovely tones and tree branches Fiona!

Great sense of light and spring sunshine, mission accomplished Fiona - and that outdoors too, well done you !

Many thank everyone for your much appreciated comments.

Beautifully sunlit path through the woods - I feel it pulling me in - I want to be there! Lovely, Fiona!

Beautifully painted, Fiona, with lots of sunshine and depth in the picture.

Don't know where my first comment went - I'll try again; it's a lovely painting, Fiona, with great sunshine and depth in the picture. I particularly like the brush marks in the lower right. Well done!

Thank you Thea, that's the kind of feeling I got when stood in front of the scene. The scene (in real life) was much better than I've captured! Lionel, thank you very much for both of your very kind comments, it's funny you should like the area lower right, that's the only part of the painting the tutor liked!Lol. Many thanks Satu, really appreciate your comment.

It's not a bad effort Fiona but there are a few points that I would like to make. To give the impression of bright sunlight the shadows need to be much stronger, particularly the nearest one and in between the shadows could have had some dappled lighter areas, much much lighter, both on the grass and the path.

The tree in the foreground could be quite a bit stronger, almost black, well, not black of course because we don't use black on its own.

Altogether it's a nice composition but needs a lift to inject some sparkle. I'll give it a shot tomorrow if I can find time, that's if you don't mind of course. As I said earlier, a good effort though at a tricky subject.

Please do have a go Alan, I look forward to seeing your interpretation. As explained in my description above it was completed over two days, a week in between and the weather was completely different for both sessions. There wasn't the crisp shadows of the first week so didn't get that sharp contrast which you have explained. I'm glad we don't use black, I don't have a any! Thank you very much for your crit....can't wait to see your version!

Just had a quick look at your portfolio and I am genuinely impressed. Some of it is top notch and I mean that - it could hold its own with any work. However, some work needs looking at in certain areas, whether it's the subject matter or the medium I'm not sure yet but I'll go through them over the next few months and try and help with constructive but honest criticism (well you asked for it!)

On a note from me I had an email today from the editor of The Artist mag. got to send a high-res image down for next month's Editor's Choice, so I expect it to go in - only one pic a month so the odds are high, I think I must have a guardian spirit looking after me, hope it's TURNER! Last weeks lesson in oils completed on site yesterday. I was hoping for a repeat in last weeks weather conditions....HA!....not a chance!Lol. Last week the tops of my ears were sun burnt, this week, I got frostbite and wind burn. It was cold and windy but at least the rain kept away. In the last ten minutes or so the sun came out which enabled me to add the shadows, which was a bonus. I hope I have captured the feeling of sunshine coming through the trees, (which I set up to paint last week) as usual not completely happy with it but I'm looking forward to next weeks challenge!
