Don't do Flowers!

I thought this looked nice on the gallery page and despite your attempts to put me off by your grumbles - I still like it!

I like it too, Fiona! There is actually delicacy in the way you use lines, even if you don't think so. And you've captured the shape of the leaves and flowers very well.

Nothing wrong with this at all, no one would ever know that you don't do flowers from looking at this. I certainly don't think it's harsh or clumsy. Possibly if the flowers were a bit brighter might improve it slightly, but I like the color of roses the way they are. I also think it would make a very nice repeat pattern on material. I think you should do some more.

I thought fabric design as well Fiona!

Thank you Stephen and my apologies for my 'grumbles', can't help it, I am rarely satisfied with the outcome of most of what I produce.......I don't suppose I'm alone in that one! Many thanks Seok for your kind remark, much appreciated. Thank you Kevin, more flowers? I'll have to invest in some brighter colours if I do. Thanks again.

Thanks Louise! Fabric or wallpaper, a bit chintzy though...lol.

So individual and different - really appealing.

I like it too Fiona! It's different and it has got a certain old fashioned feel about it. I think you should invest in some beautiful reds and do a couple more of these.

I like it too Fiona, especially the addition of the ink on the loose roses and the sweeping greenery softens the whole image in my eyes. Do more :)

This stood out in the gallery and you can do flowers, it is lovely.

A lovely little bouquet Fiona, very well done with the ink, fits perfectly.

I think this has a nice subtlety to it - colours muted and gentle, penwork not overwhelming. I think that you DO do flowers!!

Thank you very much everyone for your kind comments. I might have another go, you've made me look at it with different eyes.

All this talk of 'vintage' and 'old fashioned chintz' is a little disconcerting for me as most of our bedroom curtains have a similar look... LOL

Don't beat yourself up Fiona - you can do flowers, and the ink and paint does work. This is a lovely lose painting with a hint of Impressionism that is really most attractive. I think it is very successful and you should do more - it is definitely not dull! Well done.

I think it works beautifully, Fiona, a lovely fresh bouquet - and I like the 'old rose' pink colour

Oh no Louise! I think I had a lampshade with a similar design once upon a time. 'Vintage' is in again though..... isn't it?

Julie thanks for your positive and encouraging comment. I think I was downbeat about the subject because I'm unfamiliar with it, only ever done two other flower paintings, ages ago. Thanks again.Jenny, thank you. I might have another go but with a brighter palette, although like you, I quite like the muted dusky pink.

hehe Fiona, look at this 20 comments with mine, so I guess you are in the minority thinking this doesn't work!

Yes Ros, it looks like I'm out voted. Thanks very much.

As you know I don't do flowers, which is very plain to see from this, but I wanted to see if using ink with this type of subject would work. Well, I don't think it does. Too harsh for such a delicate subject as flowers....although done by some one elses hand it may work because I am rather clumsy and messy with my application of ink. I also only had three colours available to use which were; U. marine, Cad. yellow and Ven. red. Not the ideal palette I know either, too dull for flowers. Done on Jackson's rough, old Holland paints and Indian ink.
