It doesn't look laboured to me; the point is, of course - does it look like your nephew? If it does - great present!

Really nice portrait. To me it is good ,and difficult to do a portrait with sitter smiling ,this you have achieved very well.

I'm sure he'll be delighted with this, Duncan. And will his gift also include a bottle of wine to pour into that glass?

Thank you for your comments, Robert,David, and Jane. I use the word 'laboured' because I fiddled around, seemingly for ever, with the mouth (and the eyes, nose, etc...) to get a good likeness . . . which,at the end of the day, it really is!! I'm not sure this is 'art', but, for family, it provides, I hope, a lot of fun. I'll find out on Saturday when I present it to Richard. In actual fact, the bit I am really pleased with is the tie - the base colour of the paper required me to use only white chalk lines to create a remarkable likeness of the real thing (an amazingly un-laboured piece of pastel painting).

This is a great relaxed portrait and the reflective light on the forehead makes it.

Unison pastel and conte pastel on dark grey Murano paper (55x70cm). A laboured likeness of my nephew who is 40 on Saturday, this being a surprise portrait, done (as must be quite evident) from a photo. The foreground (table and wineglasses) are made up however in the interests of composition (Petra- please note my first attempt at still life in the bottom left hand of the painting !!)
