Both of these portraits are stunning, Duncan. The simplicity of the white and your gentle treatment of the girl's face makes for such a sympathetic view of the subject. Just love them both.

I, too, really admire your portraits, Duncan, for the same reasons as Thea. There's something very special about the colours and the delicacy with which you've portrayed them. I keep coming back to them...

A lovely piece of work, I love the contrasts.

I agree with everyone, love the way you use pastels. stunning portraits Duncan

Thank you, Thea, Jane, Sue and Petra. I really appreciate your comments. I feel (I'm certain) that I'm struggling a bit at the moment and some nice words from friends is a real tonic. My next posting might just be an oil painting so please don't miss it just because it looks nothing like I've done before. I've not abandoned pastels, but I feel compelled to move from something that I feel I'm becoming just a little bit too comfortable with.

Amazing work, love it. I have just started with pastels. not as easy as it may appear and lots to learn.

Unison Pastel on Canson paper. This beautiful young girl sat for us a couple of weeks ago at our portrait class. The dark ground emphasised the dramatic lighting from a strong table light close to her. Even though her clothes were white/off white the dark ground enabled tonal contrast to be exploited ( cf Girl 2).
