Splendid Oil Portrait Duncan, very lost in thought type of expression, very characterful hat!

love the hat

How weird I feel like that about pastels. I love the mixing and everything else about oils and acrylics. This is rather good though so keep persevering.

I agree with Dawn. Keep persevering because this is rather good ... not that that surprises me from your pastel work!

Paint is a lot less controllable than pencils or pastels so you have to learn to live dangerously and let the medium do some of the work. It is a strange concept, but if you can find the courage to do that then often surprising results happen. However, that said, this is an excellent portrait - beautifully restrained and full of insight.

There is something about oil paint, turps, canvas that is very alluring, and I sense that I must persevere with this infernal medium if I am to become a 'real', grown up painter. However, as a pastellist and draughtsman at heart , I am incredibly frustrated by having to mix colours, and by not being able to make confident marks with a pencil, a stick of charcoal or a pastel. Brushes are so disobedient!
