A lovely painting, Paul.

Very nostalgic!

Lovely work Paul! I like the the way you have done the figures.

A great nostalgic painting Paul. Traction engines & threshing machines really takes me back to my childhood. We’re all threshing machines painted a dusky pink colour? because that’s exactly how I remember them.

Thank you David, Peter, Sarah, and Brian. I think it was Ransomes standard colour, bit like Ford you can have it in any colour as long as it’s black. I think they were originally red but as they stood out most of the summer the paint faded to the pink shade .

More nostalgia! Great to see Paul…

Love the story telling in this painting :)

Only ever seen them at the Stoke Goldington rally - impressive beasts. Lovely painting Paul and glad you can engage your grandchildren in art.

What a lovely narrative and painting Paul

A lovely painting Paul 🖼 😍

A super story and a charming painting Paul of times gone by.

Alan,Cathy, Andrew , Heather, Faye and Chris thank you for you kind comments I really appreciate them. All my Grandchildren have spent time with me painting, drawing etc, they especially love it or rather the older ones loved it when they could paint in the shed/ studio or out in the garden .

Mmmm…..I can smell the smoke Paul, lovely trip back to my childhood. Colours spot on for the threshing machine, I’ve seen one in action, what a racket they make. A great painting Paul. My dad was an engineer and was mad about steam and traction engines, so I was dragged around all the steam rallies in the summer. He made a scaled model from scratch of a working locomotive engine from old shell casings and any other kind of metals he could get his hands on when he was in the Navy. Another of his projects was a working traction engine, he would put methylated spirits in it and we would have it running up and down the sitting room! Great fun. I got train sets when I was younger not dolls! 😂 Not absolutely sure they were actually for me?

Really good Paul ,I love it and I love the reaction its brought out in everyone.

Your dad sound the sort I would have got along with really well Fiona, I used all sorts of bit and bats to make thing , cannon barrel out turned out of brass tubes etc. Valerie I have also enjoyed people’s reactions, I have been looking at Gordon Berrisfield superb artwork and it brought back a lot of childhood memories and the nostalgia thank you for your comment Fiona and Valerie.

Nice picPaul, but you are not that old.

Just old enough to have seen one working in the field, I was about six or seven at the time . As my granddaughter she though I had been in the Boer war a couple of week ago so I must look ancient.

I love this collaborative work Paul. As others have said, those old thrashing machines were that dusky pink colour. I can remember working with one of these when I was a lad, only I seemed to always get the horrible dusty job of raking out the chaff from underneath!

I’m really impressed Frank , to actually have worked with one . I have seen the one that I remember as a child and a local farmer when I was living in Suffolk had a rig that he used at shows . He continued to cut the fields with a 1930/4o combine in the late 1970s . He used to stand on the platform steering and puffing away on his pipe. Thank you for your comment I appreciate it.

Nicely done Paul 😊

Really like the story behind this painting Paul. Isn’t it great when we can share with our grandchildren.

Stephen and Christine thank you for your kind comments. Both my youngest granddaughters love to paint along with me or even working in the garden great fun and some treats when it all grows .

Well done Paul, nostalgia at it's best.

Thank you George I appreciate that you took the time to look and comment.

The good old days...Nice one Paul.

Thank you Val for your kind comment.

A4 watercolour, achieved with the help of my youngest granddaughter. Always asking questions about when I was her age , she is fascinated with thing gone by ( don’t want to say history makes me feel old). Question did they have steam engines in the field , yes I did see one once in about 1957 . Thst lead up to a sketch then a painting with help to do the trees around the church and some of the corn sacks. Could not have done it without.

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
