Rough is a whole new experience Paul, think less detail and broad areas of colour. Dry brush work is excellent also on rough! What make is it, Two Rivers possibly?

Than you all for your comment. The paper is handmade 250 gsm 100% rag and is called Artway Indigo cotton rag , I bought it from Amazon £15 :48 for 35 sheets as it was mon offer . I have used heavy rough paper before but nothing like this , I’m really impressed with the quality. I just noticed they do A3 sheets as well in packs of twenty, mmm my son wanted to buy me something in return for a favour I did him , shall point this out me thinks .

Sorry Alan typo should have said thank you Alan not all, I hate spell checks and predictive text.

As I have found, it is all a learning curve ! I don't have much space now for spreading paint tubes around but when I did I agree with Alan - dry brush on rough. I always left "white areas". Keep at it !

Really interesting textures.

A new adventure for you Dixie! Sounds like quite a challenge to use, but you’ll get there. I like the colours you’ve used so far. Bluebells are just appearing round here.

Thank you Richard and Stephen for you kind comment, they are appreciated.

Thanks Tessa , I have had English bluebells out in the garden for the past two week , I think they are appearing in the woodlands just about now .

Not heard of that one Paul, Indian origin possibly. It won’t be the same as say Arches or Fabriano rough, but you’re doing okay with it for sure!

I'm sure you will get use to the new texture in no time at all Paul.

Yes I think it is made in India Alan and as always you the quality get that you pay for , ideal for initial tryouts and not so costly as well. Thank you Denise in sure it will take a few attempts to get the hang of it, it’s such a long time since I worked on such rough paper and never one that each sheet was completely different. All good fun and I do love trying things out, but hey don’t always work out.

It’s interesting and challenging using new media but you have done so successfully.

Thanks Spencer , I need to change my technique a bit a practice a bit more , learning is still fun no matter how old we are but I think we take a bit longer .

It's just worked so well. Shucks what's faffy detail anyhow. Just love those deckle edges.

I've started using rough paper this year Paul, and I really like how it seems to let extra light in to paintings. If that makes sense! Have also been for a walk on a beautiful bluebell wood this afternoon so they have been on my mind too! Think you have made a good job here.

Thanks Sylvia and Sarah fir your kind comments. I have used rough before but not handmade it dies seem different and each sheet is very different, I need to select a sheet to fit the subject I think , it a very enjoyable process . I can understand what your saying Sarah, I thinks it that you do get white or lighter colours due to the roughness of the paper, this makes it look lighter in places .

Great effects, you made a great job of this Paul I like it.

Thank you for taking the time to look and comment Carole it’s appreciated.

I’ve a few A5 pieces of rough cotton rag - it helps me to loosen up when I get fixated on detail. Really like your bluebell wood painting.

Thank you for your kind comment Jacqueline it’s really appreciated. My thought was to use the rough paper to do lose work , something I find difficult as I always want to add a bit more detail and fiddle.

A4 hand made watercolour paper very rough surface. A watercolour of bluebell woodlands on a very new paper to me, a huge learning experience as I have never used such rough paper . Each sheet is very different as or handmade, some look like cauliflower heads , I can’t get the usual details thst I try for and found this a bit unsettling at first , I am definitely out of my comfort zone. Still will persist and get there in the end , not really sure about this one.

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
