Great painting, full of action!

You’ve captured the moment so well Paul…

Super picture, good movement and colour.

Very good colouring Paul, and its a life on the ocean waves.

The splashing sea foam is done well Paul and the swell of the sea.

Love this, the colours are beautiful !!

Excellent Paul - that sea really looks rough!

Thank you all for your very kind comments they are really appreciated. It’s come out a little lighter and the gulls flying around the trawler are lost against the background.

You’ve captured the sea really well Paul

Your boats are always excellent and I really likethe way that you've done the sea.

Neil and Sandra thank you I appreciate your comments . I always worry about how the sea will look as it’s difficult to capture the movement and colours, this time it’s almost painted it’s self, it just seemed to come together naturally.

I can imagine the ship falling and rising in the peaks and troughs. Great sense of movement Paul.

Lovely picture Paul, you've caught that swell beautifully. I'm trying to practice rough seas at the moment for a trawler homeward bound in a storm!

Great sense of wild seas, I like this Paul

Thank you Marjorie, Trevor and Heather for your much appreciated comments. Looking forward to seeing you finished painting Trevor .

You can feel the determination of the boat against the current of the waves. Lovely Paul.

When a painting comes together naturally, it brings a rare kind of raw energy and authentic movement to the sea. 🌊✨

Excellent painting Paul.

Lynda, Sidra, Christine and Denise thank you for the kind comments.

I am NOT cut out to be a sailor: your painting makes me feel very unenvious of those who would venture out in these seas: I do like the semi- transparent spray you've caught there - cleverly done.

Love how you captured the spray

Thank you a Robert and Jan, I appreciate your comments . Robert I get seasick on a duck pond even on a flat calm day .

Beautiful painting full of movement, Paul.

Everything has been painted so well Paul

Thank you George I appreciate that.

Lovely work Dixie. You can smell the brine and coal smoke, hear the struggling engine and crashing waves and feel the wind stinging your face.

Thank you Mark, I imagine those things as I’m painting scenes like this , total opposite is when I paint a woodlands scene then it’s calm , quite and very peaceful.

I think this is one of your best Dixie! You have really captured the solidity of the vessel plowing through a rough sea and you obviously know the history of these boats and feel their life.

What skill, Paul, the smoke, the foam the movement it has it all. Fabulous!

Thank you Tessa and Willie I really appreciate your comments.

Watercolour of a steam drifter plowing through a rough sea, once a very common sight around the British coast bringing in the fresh fish the nation used as a staple diet. Hardworking boats and tough hardworking fishermen out in all weathers for day , home a quick turnaround and out again while the season lasted. One of my favourite boats, love the history behind them as well.

About the Artist
Paul (Dixie) Dean

I have sketched most of my life on and off I became interested in watercolour following a spinal injury whilst in hospital but did not follow it up. My eldest daughter bought me a beautiful wooden box set of half pans about twenty five years ago I dabbled on and off until retirement twelve years…
