Weekly class exercise

Excellent portrait with a very interesting expression Diana and great tonal values. Love his grumpy look.

Thank you Carole. He’s either really deep in thought or pretty fed up

This really is a wow-portrait, Diana. Beautiful colour palette!

Fabulous portrait, Diana, I think the colours, so well balanced, suit the man's mature years.

I think your choice of colours are great, its's much more interesting than a full colour portrait and I imagine much harder, fantastic work!!

He looks vaguely familiar, but I don't know who he is either: what I do know is that this is a very accomplished study: you've caught a real character, and I like the incidental touches, the embroidery or pattern of the top he's wearing, the curve of that back rest, the way you've caught the light perfectly on his specs. It's very good!

Class work Diana. You can almost read his thoughts.

Love the colours you’ve used. So much more interesting than usual colours.

I’ve been told it’s actor David Ryall.

I like the combinations of colour in this excellent portrait.

Lovely shadow work

Wonderful expressive portrait, Diana!

Nothing wrong with going tonal rather than colour and this is excellent Diana.

Wonderful characterisation and beautifully painted. He has a genuine soor face as we would say in Scotland.

Another triumph Diana and once again proving that correct values and a restricted palate win the day !

Not your usual subject matter Diana (unless you keep your portraits under your hat!) but very successful nonetheless. I like that little hint of different colour in his specs.

Good morning Mia. Thank you for your interest. It was a good choice of subject by the tutor. Thank you Willie. I didn’t take colour and age/character into consideration but thanks for that thought. I will do in future Hello Linda. I actually was being lazy in not mixing the correct colours but I love the value studies. Morning Robert. I’m told he is an actor from the Harry Potter films. David Ryall. Thank you for your interesting comment, It’s interesting to read about the areas you mentioned. Thank you Jim. I wonder what they are ! Good morning Christine. Thank you. I was going to paint another monochrome portrait and I think I’ll try another two colour mix Thank you Stephen. I really like the variety of colour as well as value. I’ll definitely try it again. Thank you Jill. I strengthen the darks many times to achieve that depth. Thank you Cesare. I really appreciate that. Morning Barry. I hadn’t intended to go tonal but it’s a great observation exercise as well as pleasing on the eye. Hello Graham. Thank you. I wonder if that’s his character face or ‘him’ I love that expression., soor face. Thanks David. I’m going to try another similar experiment where you use unlikely colours but in the correct tonal values.

Thank you very much Tessa. I do enjoy portrait painting though my work is more often still life. I have another portrait in mind now.

Amazing portrait Diana, what a character! Wonderfully portrayed

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. I really like the limited colour palette and what a great face

Very good, well observed portrait Diana, he does look familiar.

I just looked him up online, he died in 2014!

Great portrait Diana I particularly like the palette

Good portrait, Diana - the limited palette is really effective and is what drew my eye to it.

Just amazing Diana! Your "cheating" with the use of a limited, greyish palette had lead to a fantastic result.

Brilliant portrait Diana, the two colour palette works so well. I always admire your darks.

Great portrait Diana. Love the limited palette.

It’s what one calls Top Draw Diana. Superb.

Wonderful portrait, great expression, love the colours and it is superbly painted, Diana, and so different.

Thank you Carole. He really is oozing character. Good morning Heather. Thank you for the kind comments. It’s interesting isn’t it how we are visually attracted to monochrome work. Thank you Stephen. I had to find out about him when I was told who is /was. Thanks for letting me know. I wonder if our tutor knows much about him. Thank you David. In retrospect, the palette enhances the portrait. Hello Jenny snd thank you. I don’t pay enough attention to colour in a painting other than if it’s ones I like. Food for thought. Thank you Detlev. I appreciate and value your thoughts Thank you Anjana. My tutor has always encouraged the use of strong darks. Morning Audrey. Thanks you again. I do have another portrait in mind to paint in a similar palette. Morning John and thanks very much. Amusing really that it started out really badly and came close to being binned Thank you Russell. My tutor always chooses portrait subjects with striking qualities. Thank you Maureen. It’s interesting to discover who the man is. It’s seemed so impersonal and almost rude to overlook him for who he is.

Thank you Gudrun and Richard. It just shows that you don’t need to spend a fortune on colours 😂

That's not cheating, that is pure talent.

And that is a well received compliment Fred ! Thank you

Cor blimey that's brilliant Diana

What a great comment to read Dennis. Tryouts so much !

I have no idea who this is. The image and demo were provided by David Thomas I got off to a terrible start but pulled it back by taking more care eth proportions and really studying the values. I decided to use a mix of Burnt Sienna and. Coll blue. The others didn’t cheat and painted him in full colour! .
