The shadows really make this piece work so very well Barry.

Thank you John, I agree they are so important I often add them in to give extra life to some scenes. This is obviously a calculated risk as it is very easy to spoil your work if you get it wrong.

Another super painting, Barry. I love the details - or rather, the suggestion of detail - an art form in itself.

Thank you Lewis, it has to be a suggestion as I am not that good at detail. Thankfully I have over the years developed the skill of making marks that read as reasonably realistic.

Lovely composition Barry, 😃

Nice work once again Barry, perhaps the ink work in the distance is a bit strong?

Nice one Barry. The light makes me want to get out there.

Thanks Linda and Stephen, interesting that you think the distant ink work is too strong Stephen as it was deliberate with a view to bringing out the lights.

Thank you Jem, first Exiles in April if you can wait that long but your still young and hardy so I expect you’ll be out before then!!!

Another cracker Barry yes the cafe works so well beautifully observed with great light and colours a definite winner once more

Love the darks and composition. Well painted.

Lovely scene beautifully captured. I agree that the building on the left gives the painting structure.

You always get so many lovely fresh marks into your pictures. And great compositions.

This is super work Barry, both the composition and painting are lovely

Lovely painting Barry .. the canals make such lovely paintings. Like your figures.

Lovely scene, so inviting Barry.

Thanks to Marjorie, Dennis, Andre, Willie, Shirley, David, Rachel and Carole, with all this attention I will have to keep using ink and wash.

Another lovely painting, Barry. Glad you put in the cafe it just complements the scene.

Thank you Ellen, yes i think it was a good decision.

This works so well - love the ink and watercolour

Super ink work again Barry and a really lovely composition.

What a lovely scene Barry, very nicely painted.

Beautiful painting, Barry.

Thank you Maureen, Fiona, Margaret and Cesare.

I like it a lot. The black ink gives it an edge. Seeing this scene I can't wait for the warmer season again!

Thank you Ibolya, I agree the ink does enhance the darks and roll on the warmer weather.

Just seen your message Barry, sorry. Yes, I'll definitely be out before April, unless we have permanently appalling weather of course. Good news is I've just got a car! Looking forward to Exiles of course. I have an idea for a location too.

Love the light and spontaneity of the piece.

This makes me feel all 'roll on summer'! Beautiful.

Continuing with ink and wash I have used a photo I took last year next to the lock at Bradford on Avon. Initially I intended to leave the left hand building which is a cafe out but after doing a few thumb nail sketches decided this was the best composition.

About the Artist
Barry Hulme

I started painting in 2004, I am influenced by Wesson, Seago and many of the great masters, more recently I enjoy the work of Steve Hall, John Hoar and Alvaro Castignet to name but a few. I paint in a loose style and try to simplify as I can. The medium I enjoy most is watercolour but dabble with…
