This is beautiful Alan, so calm. I love it x

A difficult scene to catch as you say Alan. but a nice job and an attractive sketch. Nice work. Yes, I've entered the card competition, my very first entry..(-:

Looks lovely Alan, I think you have the perspective spot on, 😀

Wow Alan. Your scene has incredible distance, so well balanced but it did make me shiver a bit as it is so atmospheric.

The first thing I thought, Alan, was how tricky this scene would be to draw. The lock gates and the canal turn look particularly difficult to get right. Great job for plein-air sketching, just great. Bri

Great job with such a tricky scene.

Great use of perspective in a lovely piece of artwork

Splendid Alan. It demonstrates the magic of drawing. It consists of lines, solid blacks, and a few washes, all freely rendered, yet it conveys the scene perfectly, plus the perspective and distance. When you think of it, there are few lines in nature...it's odd that it works, but it does and that's slightly magical.

Love this one Alan - beautifully done.

I was brought up by the side of the Bridgwater Canal. Love this.

They’re captured perfectly, Alan. I’ve travelled on the Trent and Mersey Canal by narrowboat....very peaceful. The Foxton Locks in Leicestershire are a wonderful sight to see, they are a huge flight of locks that takes a boat an hour to get through them coming down, even longer going up.

Great sketch Alan, Loving your use of coloured paper, it makes for interesting pictures.

Nice lively sketch.

A really grand sketch Alan, beautifully drawn.

So much information, I like the composition Alan.

That’s superb Alan! I love the solidity of the nearest lock, and the angle you’ve got this from. A tricky subject I’m sure but you’ve certainly cracked it.

Lovely sketch Alan

Oh yes! A stunner Alan. There is nothing quite like a good ink sketch done by the hand of someone who knows how to handle it! Love it!

Great draughtsmanship Alan

Looked for your work Alan and this is the first one I came to. Love the 'freshness' of the sketch and composition.

Excellent sketch as always Alan and I like your use of washes from the Indian ink.

Fantastic drawing, Alan! I would love to receive this as a Xmas card.

As said, great perspective and a very good understated wash.

Indian ink on A4 Grey paper. A continuation of my recent plein air sketches of canal life! This scene turned out to be more difficult than I first thought. Getting the perspective angle spot-on was a little tricky, although you may not think so! I was standing on a lovely old cattle bridge looking down towards this bank of four locks; I have this bridge in another sketch which I will post another day. I have made a start on an oil painting from one of these canal sketches, which should be completed next week, time permitting. I’ve broken off temporarily to complete a couple of Christmas cards for the competitions being run in both the magazines – the deadline is looming in case any of you fancy giving it a shot!
