Very helpful Alan, establishing tones is so important in any painting subject. Good contrasts always catch my eye then colours. I can see that this will be another stunner! I look forward to your piece in the e-newsletter.

Looks beautiful already! Thanks for the useful guidance :)

Very interesting to see the tonal values Alan. Looking forward to the final work.

Interesting to see your starting point, Alan. (I rather like it as it is, lovely range of soft blues and greys!)

Always useful to see actual examples of a process in action rather than just reading the theory. Your tonal studies look rather better than mine tend to do at this stage - probably because I tend to leave unpainted canvas rather than employ a bit of white.... hmm: food for thought.

Thanks everyone, glad you like concept of what it's about. Robert, it was a mid tinted board that I started with. The few white areas are going to be my lightest values, I now have in position all these values up and down the scale.

Alan this is a great aid and I look forward to reading and putting in to practice your methods. It’s looking good!

It's so good to get an insight into the colours laid down first. I will look forward to the next stage 😀

Can't wait to see the finished painting, looks good now.

It's looking good Alan, look forward to reading your piece.

Great start - look forward to seeing it finished and reading your article.

Great stuff Alan as always

Super start Alan, always good to see the process, and I look forward to your feature in November.

Fabulous Alan, look forward to the feature

Great stuff Alan , you’re correct regarding the importance of tonal values , if an amateur wishes to advance to the next level they ignore this advice at their extreme cost

Hi Alan , regarding the open air art market here in Dublin it’s fabulous and I love doing it , I display every Sunday and thankfully sell pretty well , we also have what’s called The Peoples Art once a month in St Stephens green where you get to hang for a Friday , Saturday and Sunday for just €50 you can do very nicely here as the footfall is fabulous

It's not often that I post a work in progress, but here is my latest piece. I’m writing a feature for the November e-newsletter titled ‘The importance of tonal values’, and I hope that some of you will find it helpful. It’s not this particular scene, but the same principles apply whatever the subject. I have started this painting using shades of grey and establishing my tonal values from the outset. This way, you should achieve good contrast and aerial perspective. Simple and basic stuff of course, but so often ignored. Worked from a photograph courtesy of Dawn Farley. Oil on board, 25 x 60cm.
