Like the model train Tessa, reminds me of my brothers train set. Wonder if he still has it? Good cactus Ron, glad you have some sun, so do we! Great shadows on the ivy leaves Hilary, you are good at the detail.
Back in the garden today and drew this potted tomato plant which is struggling a bit to ripen. Pencil and watercolour.
Tessa, don’t know if the old trick of putting them in a drawer to ripen still works. Haven’t tried it. Out and about while the sun continues to shine. Someone mentioned that wild flowers are beginning to show themselves here so must be headed for Spring. I know, it’s difficult to take in but I just think of everything as being upside down. Did a small sketch while my other half was chasing wild flowers with her camera.  Have also primed a few canvas panels in preparation for some inspiration.
Don’t lose hope with tomatoes, plenty of time yet (I hope). love the tree growing out of the rocks, Ron.
Hi there! Like the model train unusual subject from you! Tomatoes not to far from ripening! Like the agarve Ron and Ellis Brook looks an intriguing place! Love the colour of your ivy Hilary, your botanical subjects are great! I have just been sat on terrace playing with charcoal first time I have used charcoal so clearly more experimentation required! Have to admit I don’t like getting my hands dirty, but  do fancy getting to grips with it and also pastels.

Your charcoal sketches are good Gillian. I also don’t like getting my hands dirty and dusty which is why I’ve never got anywhere with pastels.  Ron, re the ripening tomatoes, they are coming but slowly! I’ve heard of putting them next to a ripe banana but not in a drawer? I’m sure they’ll get there, it’s a bit like watching the kettle to make it boil... I just realised that none of us posted anything yesterday! I will try to do something today, but definitely struggling for inspiration at present. So I dug out a photo from lockdown dog walking a month or two back, which I took because I liked the way the trees framed the sunlit path ahead on a hot day. Dog sniffed while I took photos!

Hi Tessa I can see why you were attracted to the composition of the scene, very effective. Like you I am finding inspiration lacking at the moment! That’s why I decided to play with the charcoal sticks and charcoal pencil. Unfortunately they are just cheap materials but it’s all I have at the moment. Not sure about the disgusting state of my hands after a short time! Having said that I really like the immediacy of the tonality and the different effects  one can create. So you never know I might get over the mess. Here’s a quick sketch of my wood shed hot of the press ( before it gets too hot to be outside )
Gillian, you must stick with the charcoal, both really good sketches, I especially like the wood shed. Lovely sketch of the sunlit path, Tessa, and the dog sniffing too! Mine is from my walk this morning, past a friends paddock where her two shires were dozing. Also lacking a bit in inspiration, I have four WIP at the moment, happy with none of them!
Two delightful outdoor scenes, good to see what others see on their day to day lives. Re the charcoal, and this is being discussed on another forum thread, when I went to an oil painting course a few years ago, we were taught to draw first in charcoal, which I thought would be very messy but actually works very well. I did use it for that for a while, but now just start an oil with drawing in paint itself and a thin brush, which works for me.
Another great collection of individual responses to the August, sketch a day. I'll do my best to join in before the end of the month.
Some great work folks, not done much just a bits of the attached , still wip doing it as the mood takes.
Sunday was obviously everyone’s day off, including myself. Dixie, your sketch is coming on very nicely and can’t wait to see the finished piece. Nice pair of heavy horses, Katy. Gillian, nice wood shed. They say you have to get up early to capture great scenes. Especially true when the day gets very hot. I’ve had a go with charcoal and conte crayon today, to capture my morning alarm call. It’s one of my favourite birds, the Kookaburra, but it always sounds like they are laughing their heads off at waking us up so early.
