Lovely picture, Thea.

Extraordinarily good considering the way this was drawn. So much movement and vitality which I'm not sure you would have achieved had you drawn this in a more conventional way! I'm not exactly sure why this is, but it's quite a revelation to me.

Lovely happy painting, haven't tried upside down yet, but I will! lol

like it Thea another painting with a lovely free style well done Thea

Thank you very much Shirley, Louise, Debs and Dennis - I shall know exactly what to do when I am struggling with the intricacies of a particular subject - turn my reference and my paper upside down - simples!

Lots of vitality in this Thea. For a moment I thought you were upside down whilst painting, now that would be something different!

I tried drawing upside down once but the blood just went to head. Well done!

Thank you very much Stephen, Gudrun and Kevin for your positive comments. Now there's a thought Stephen and Kevin - do one while standing on my head? I would, but I have never ever mastered doing a handstand and I feel it is a tad too late to succeed with that one, lol! I will have to content myself with turning the photo I am working from upside down - a bit duller but the other option might result in a trip to A & E.

Such a fun painting Thea, I really love it. Thanks for suggesting this novel way of drawing it has certainly helped me 'unblock!' I now need to try the upside down technique! ,

Don't think I can compete with this performing the right way up Thea! Brill

Great free style to this piece Thea, like the technique, well done.

I had somehow missed this Thea but saw it in Facebook just now and it is such a wonderful painting! Full of life and the children look so happy and carefree. Thank you again for suggesting this method of drawing, it has given us so much!

I've been out all day and only just saw it on Facebook. Thank you for your kind comments and glad you are having as much fun as I am experimenting with these unusual drawing methods. For anything tricky from now on, I shall definitely turn my reference photo and paper upside down!

What a wonderful family memento, Thea! The immediacy and vibrancy of the painting is superb.

This one was done from a photo I took last August. My two grandchildren and I were on Aldeburgh beach on a very windy day and they were pretending to be blown over and I was holding tightly on to them and bracing myself to stop them pulling us all over. I did try to sketch this a few months ago, but the central figure (me) turned out looking very stiff and totally failed to capture the wind blown leaning back attitude of the children's bodies. Sketch was binned. I had another go last night, using the upside down one line method and all of a sudden, the bodies have movement and the attitudes are right! Such a surprise.

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
