You and I seem to have the same minds over the last few days Thea. We have been away in our caravan and I have done two similar sketches on Hastings and Eastbourne beach. Will post them later but this is exactly what we sould be aiming at Thea, getting the substance down and using it where ever we fancy. Lovely stuff.

They are fun to do, aren't they Derek? I tend to be drawing standing up, trying to balance my sketchbook in one hand, pen in other while also trying to kick a football back to my small grandson. Makes for wobbly lines, but I think that adds to the spontaneous look - or at least I hope so. Thank you for your kind comment.

I've said t before - I think your style of painting really works for picture books as they are full of interest and are captivating.

Thank you, Joseph, very kind of you. I think I have said before that I loved this type of illustration as a child and I suspect they made such a lasting impression on me that when I attempt this sort of sketch, something in my distant memory takes over and becomes an influence. I am enjoying the pen and wash work, but I do have to confess that I keep thinking that I ought to get back to some 'proper' painting soon and stop mucking about.

A lovely happy, sunny painting Thea, it looks as though you all had an enjoyable day!

Beautiful bright painting Thea love it

Thank you Christine and Sandy. We had a lovely day, Christine, but it was very hot indeed. I coped by wearing a rather fetching sun hat with a huge brim. I am not really a sun worshipper - much too pale and fair I'm afraid.

Ah! All those characters in the water. It does almost tell a story and as Joseph says would make a good book illustration. Super seaside scene Thea!

Thanks Louise. It was hard to draw the figures because I had literally about 10 seconds per person until they had moved away. Still, at that rate, you definitely can't fiddle and fuss so that must be a plus!

gorgeous Thea and so apt with the weather we have been having, beaches everywhere will be looking similar to this!

Thank you very much, Ros. A very typically British beach scene, eh!

All that lovely cool water! Great 'on the spot sketch' Thea. I feel your confidence shining through!

Hehe Thea, about 30 minutes after my posting the heavens opened here and it's been raining ever since !

Lovely and lively again Thea!

Great fun and your usual light touch.

Last Tuesday, the family went en masse to Aberdovey Beach. I took my sketchbook and grabbed a few minutes between playing with small grandchildren to dash off a few sketches. I applied some wash when I got home. Very rough and ready, but I hopefully conveys all the busy atmosphere and fun people were having. Two more sketches to come... Pen and wash in my sketchbook.

About the Artist

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
