Really works for me and made the better for the inclusion of the uniquitous phone box - I love them in my paintings for that splurge of colour and added interest. We have a lot to thank Giles Scott for.

I know how you feel, Thea: what to paint and what to leave unpainted. When to stop!!! If you know the work of Judi Whitton, this is a bit like that. Very loose and lively but there is a lot of thinking behind that! This is just fantastic, although I also like your other work, this is something new. Keep on experimenting!

Thank you very much Michael and Mia for your encouraging comments. Michael, yes - aren't post boxes great and this one was just where I needed it! Mia, I have always been a great fan of Judi Whitton and it was in fact her work that started me down the path I have taken. I don't think she does much pen and wash, if any, although I would love to see the results if she did. I am sure they would be colourful and interesting. You are right about the 'when to stop' - the eternal dilemma for those of us who like to leave bits unpainted. Also totally right about working like this needing a lot of thinking out as it isn't immediately obvious which bits need paint and which bits don't. Fun though!

Fantastic composition Thea, love the the red phone box

Thank you so much, Petra - very kind of you. (P.S. If I can just mention something - I am sorry if I have missed anyone's postings but we are under a bit of a strain in our house as my husband is incapacitated and I am having to do everything as he can't even drive at the moment. I hardly have time to paint, which is why my postings have been a bit thin on the ground. I will try to look at the gallery at regular intervals as I do enjoy seeing everyone's work and leaving a comment, but they might just be a bit late).

Lovely work again Thea! I really like the way you draw, the lines look happy, never too stiff or too floppy just happy.

This new way of working is going very well Thea!

Thank you very much Satu and Louise for you kind comments.

I think this works so well Thea because your drawing is so attractive - any colour wash just adds an extra dimension, and in the case of the background, helps to set it off.

The unpainted areas are like a wave of quiet calm moving through the picture. I like how you have included the shadows under the eaves etc on the unpainted buiding....nice touch.

Thank you so much Sharon and Gudrun. I can't believe someone likes my greens!!! Never thought I would see the day that someone said that as I am usually so rubbish with that dreaded colour.

Thank you Fiona. I think the calmness was what I was aiming for - not shutting the painting down, if you see what I mean. I think paintings need to 'breath' and often a lightness in the centre of the painting makes that happen. Well - that's my theory, lol.

Hi Thea, another little beauty, in your delicate style.

Another gem Thea and I love the economy of paint.

I think the interesting composition of your paintings are what make them so attractive Thea. The colours are lovely too!

Beautiful Thea. Your pen lines are full of interest and a great choice of painted "bits"!!

Thank you very much Karyl, Frank, Christine and Avril for you very kind comments.

Still experimenting with leaving some areas of the pen and wash unpainted. I know a lot of people do this already, but it is a new concept to me. I have to say I always feel a lot more comfortable with a degree of white paper left untouched, so I think I will pursue this idea a bit further. It is actually trickier than I first thought as to decide what should be painted with a wash and what should be left unpainted takes some thinking about to get the balance right. I hope I will get better at that decision as I progress. I was surprised in this one to find that I came to the decision that the focal point should be left unpainted - a bit odd I agree, but that is how it came across to me. I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
