You won't get boo-ed with a painting like this Thea. It's fresh, colourful and well painted. You might even have to do an encore. More.... More..... More...!!!!!

So glad you decided to post this one, love the bold and very different colours for you that you've used. I should think that this will do your street cred no end of good. Bravo or should that be Brava?

I think this is very appealing - you don't know whether you can do something 'til you try - I love it.

Lovely vibrant colours. Looking forward to see more.

Thank you very much Chris, Debs, Christine and Lorraine for your encouragement. It feels very weird being right back at the beginning again, so to speak. I am reasonably comfortable with my watercolours, but this is a whole new ball game. So many decisions - how much pen, how bold should the pen be, how much wash and what depth of colour - I really feel like I did at my first watercolour lessons - all at sea. So thank you for giving me a push to keep having a go and making me feel that I can now raise my head above the parapet a fraction!

How lovely to see a pen and wash painting from you and what a lovely pen and wash it is!!!

A method which I enjoy and it looks as if you have mastered it already - hope to see eome more.

Certainly a change in style, but no less the high standard I would expect from you. I'm currently expoloring pen and wash too. Hope I can reach your standard!

No boooos Thea! Bravo is the best word, I love it!

It is lovely, Thea, it all works well together, love the colours and the pen work too

It's a super pen& wash Thea. Great washes and great pen work to go with them, I hope you try another!

Thank you one and all for such lovely and supportive comments - much more than I expected I assure you! I am currently (spurred on by all your encouragement) attempting another pen and wash. Sadly, I think it is going to be pants - but we'll see. I still have the ducks to work one at well.....help!

Sorry - that should have been 'I still have the ducks to work on as well...' obviously need more wine!

There isn;t anything else left to say Thea, great pen and wash.

It's been said already ... more, more, more! I like the vibrancy.

Absolutely charming Thea. I love the gentle colours and the way you've painted the water is perfect. love the repetitive shapes of the boats too - encore!!

Love this picture - lovely choice of colours and a charming setting.

Thank you very much Glennis, Gundrun, Jane and Deborah for your lovely comments. I confess to being a bit gob-smacked at how kind everyone has been about the sketch as I am a rank beginner at this style and I certainly didn't expect much in the way of comments. Thanks to all your encouragement, I am working on another pen and wash at the moment, but it is proving trickier as it is a simpler scene without the detail of this one. It might end up on the gallery.....we'll see.

Trepidation? I'd be puffed up with pride if I'd produced this, Thea! Absolutely stunning! The linework is just right without overwhelming and the washes are clear and luminous - everything a pen and wash should be!

This is really good Thea, amazing only the second one. Lovely and delicate and gorgeous colours!

So very nice Thea. Watercolour and pen together, my favorite mediums :)

Love the simplicity, arrangment and colours. Another smashing picture.

Thank you very much Seok, Denise, Sarah and Peter for all your nice comments, which I really appreciate.

Like the subtle reflections in the water, a lovely image.

Wonderful watercolour Thea, really colourful.

Thank you so much, Lesley and Carole for your compliments. It was actually the perfect place for me to paint as it is so colourful, so I could let rip with my love of colour!

Very impressed !!! This is gorgeous and shows how talented you are .Wonderful colours and drawing.

Hi Avril, nice to hear from you. Thank you so much for such a lovely comment. I really have no idea what I am doing with pen and wash, so glad you think it turned out ok.

I am glad I have found your pictures! This one is vibrant and colourful. A truly delightful piece. Keep up the painting!

Thank you very much, Chris, all the encouraging comments will certainly ensure that I keep going and keep trying to improve my pen and wash technique.

You obviously don't need me to tell you how brilliant your pen and wash work is Thea judging from all the comments you have already received. What I can say is that in "the flesh" they look even more stunning than in the gallery. I love them! Well done.

Why thank you, Julia - really kind of you! I know it is a style you rather like, so how about doing one and posting it. I would be the first to look and enjoy!

The colours you use work perfectly Thea, on all these paintings

This is one of my favourites of your paintings. I love the horses too.

Well here goes - something completely different, which I post with great trepidation as this is only the second pen and wash I have ever done in my life and it might be instrumental in destroying my street cred! This is of the colorful little houses in the harbour of St Tropez, taken from an old photograph when little fishing boats were the norm, rather than the million dollar yachts that now take up the moorings. Not very good at this, but it is a start and I am going to try a couple more (unless I get boo-ed off the stage!). Watercolour and pen on W & N Hot Pressed.

About the Artist
Thea Cable

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
