Very nice and fresh work Thea. You certainly did well to complete this view in the time. I think outdoor painting is great for producing good fresh results.

Pretty good for 15 mins...more importantly, you did it outdoors when many of us hid behind ours. Our poor dogs never got out. I like this for its spontaneity and freedom in just...going for it. Incidentally, we have spaniels.

Very well done for painting outside, especially in January, and what a good result.

Hey thea your dog walking view is similar to mine, great painting.

Lovely spontaneous painting Thea!

Thank you very much Stephen, Roger, Louise, Karyl and Christine - really nice of you to add such positive comments. I remember once Sylvia said that she had sat in a black bin bag while outside sketching in the bad weather - I could have done with one yesterday for sure. Roger, I love spaniels - I have a Flat Coated Retriever (Milly).

I am going to say something obvious. This has a wonderful immediacy to it, which is not surprising given that it is a sketch. However, you could have deadened it by the addition of colour, which you haven't!

Well done Thea! Fresh, lively and I can't see anything wrong with your greens, a good balance of yellow/green to dark green. Isn't it great to sketch outdoors?! Will you be building this into a 'proper' painting?

Good for you Thea to take the plunge and sketch outdoors in horrible weather and you've enhanced this delightful landscape with your delicate addition of colour. You'll have to take your sketch book every time you go out now :)

I think that your having us on as it looks like its been painted on a summers day, I can feel the sun shining on those yellow fields and I can just imagine the tractor cutting the hay. :-) I have thought about doing some 'plein air' painting as my paintings are done very quickly, but with the weather lately its a battle just to go outside to get the coal for the fire, never mind stand about and paint! Very brave of you, and a great sketch, looks like a lovely view, and I like the panoramic format and the composition with the lines leading to the little house. I think that you should have added some grey skies, black clouds and some rain drops tho. Today's been that dark that you'd need a torch to paint outside.

Lovely view Thea, if you have a view like this to lookout onto when you take your dog out you are doing very well, super painting, oh for this weather now ! You have managed to make this look wonderful, super greens and super recession back to the distant hills

Thank you very much Gudrun, Fiona, Val and Kevin for such interesting and nice comments. I admit I exercised a bit of artistic licence about what sort of day it was. I was so depressed by the grey, dark and horrible weather that I thought I would skim my mind forward to what the view is like in lovely weather. If I hadn't I would have had to produce a painting full of greys and mud - not my style at all!

Thank you very much, Ros. I am a stranger to greens (scared stiff of the wretched colour) so I did try to find some that were fresh and interesting. As I said in my previous comment, the sketch doesn't reflect what the day was actually like - I was just portraying the scenery. I'll try and tackle dank, dark, raining and miserable another time (perhaps I will need to buy a tube of Payne's Grey, lol!).

really appealing - something to be pleased with.

Thank you, Michael, very kind of you.

Thea, I love this, it's inspiring. I'm a southern softy living in north London and you put me to shame! I'm full of plans to get out One Day and sketch but I haven't made it happen... but now I WILL. Wondeful and I agree with Fiona, the greens are great, maybe because you were right there it was easier in a way to get the tones? Despite the weather! Very well done.

Good idea Thea, this is very good, great for ideas in your paintings.

Lovely view you have there, well done for getting it down on paper!

Thank you so much Caroline, Carole and Debs for your encouragement. Caroline, I have to confess that I have made the greens a lot brighter than they were. It was such a dismal day that I didn't see any value in producing a dismal painting of what is actually a superb view - so I decided to give it a push forward into Spring - artistic licence and all that. It was nice to get out and do something on the spot and I have decided that as the weather improves I won't go out without my small sketch book. Lots of empty pages need filling anyway!

Really lovely work, Thea! There's so much immediacy and atmosphere in this little sketch.

Lovely work Thea, sorry I have missed some of your postings.

Thank you very much Glennis and Seok - very kind of you.

For the first time ever, I took my small sketch book out with me yesterday when I took my dog for a walk. It was a terrible day, drizzling and very windy( I must have been mad). I took my normal route of over the stile in front of my house and then walked up by the fence line, which is where I stopped to try and sketch the view. I live right out in the country and you can see right across the fields to Wales. I don't really do plein air sketching (and especially not when the weather is chucking it's worst at me), but I had a go - 3 minutes for the actual sketch and then about 15 mins to add some colour - the quickest painting ever for me! Also, a first in that it was a painting full of the dreaded greens - my bete noire. I was standing knee deep in mud and it wasn't the pleasantest experience I have ever had, but I was actually quite pleased with the liveliness of the result. I might do more if my dog has the patience to wait for me - she wasn't impressed yesterday when I stopped dead and left her standing in the rain! P.S. Once again, the image is better enlarged as for some reason it becomes sharper?

About the Artist

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
