And you said you couldn't do faces? WOW!

Thank you all for such nice comments. Di, I'm afraid I can't take too much credit for the man or his face as I did have to use a tutorial painting from one of my books to do him. I have no experience of painting faces so it was a good way to learn how to get the expression and shape. Hopefully, I will be able to do some figures and faces in the future without this help.

This is excellent work Thea. You have managed to make the building and the man equally important yet have not split the painting in two. I love the gentleman in the foreground - certainly looks as if he belongs in that beautiful house. Very well done!

So good, a great picture.

I do admire the discipline in your paintings, the leaving alone that which needs to be left. A painting of very considerable charm, very well composed (and, of course, painted).

I like this one Thea, I can see what you mean by taking away all the detail in the lower part of a building. I do like your idea of using two elements within a painting which are linked in some way to tell a story. Although you have painted the man quite loose he is obviously much closer to the viewer, as such I think it works equally well if the man were supporting the house, or if the house were supporting the man, if you know what I mean. I am really fascinated by this whole idea and hope to try it soon. Well done.

this 'leaped' at me, we pass Inch House every year on the journey to visit my husband's relatives in Fife,so I looked through the rest of your portfolio & there were the fishing boats at Hastings, one of my own oft painted subjects ( we live in Hailsham). It is spooky, like you are painting my life- but better than I do !

Thank you to everyone to has commented for your encouragement. How amazing, Jenny, that you should see Inch House so often. I was taken around the house when I was about 15 by my father. My family coat of arms and initials of Lord Liberton and his wife are carved over the front door if I remember rightly. My family name is Winram. The house passed out of the family in about 1700's.

I really like that Thea, love the way you make so much use of the white paper making it so fresh.

I like Inch House with the old gentleman in front it sort of completes the picture, the trees at the side are super. Thankyou Thea for the comment you made on 'Murphy' a friendly dog I met in Folkstone in the summer.

Superb work Thea brilliant!

Thank you all for your lovely comments. Paul - it is nice to hear from you again and thank you so much for your very kind words. Hope all is well with you.

This is lovely and fresh. Was the instruction book by Trevor Waugh by any chance?

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
