It’s very interesting study, Tessa.

Thank you Art. 👍🏻

Now I’m guessing….is it Constable?😁

Oh Marjorie! Surely it’s not that bad! 🤔😩

Silly me! Now I’ve put my specs on….Seurat? Oh no, he was dots….seriously, you look as tho’ you really enjoyed doing this!

I did! I think the harder option will be painting my own subject in the style of…but I think you’ve done that successfully?

Yes Tessa - very Van Gogh - I like it.

There's no mistaking that style. Well done Tessa, it'll be interesting to see the second part of this challenge.

I’ve always loved his work, and I’ve dissected it many times and done what you’ve done here… a great exercise and useful I believe!

Thanks very much for commenting Shaun, Lewis and Alan. I found the hardest part was not knowing how Van Goch would have started his painting and how he built up the work. More research needed!

Challenge well met Tessa

Many thanks Coral and Heather.

You’re most of the way there Tessa! A great result. I liked the term I did with Davy, getting into the mind and ways of how each artist tackled their subjects. Enjoy it.

I think you have done a superb job of it Tessa , I would not have a clue of where to start .

Thanks Fiona. It was you, I remember now, who had done this before, and you had some excellent results! Our group decided we needed something more structured than previously, and I’ve missed a few but this one has gone really well all round.

Thanks Dixie, yes starting was tricky!

A pretty good attempt Tessa. I’m sure that painting other styles from different artists must be very informative. Must try it sometime. Sorry to say that I’m not keen on VanGoh.

A great interpretation of Vincent, Tessa.

Yes, that’s right. I thoroughly enjoyed it. We started from the impressionists, working through to Fauvism and cubism. I miss Davy’s class very much, I’m still in touch with them and they are starting off with Braque this term. They have sent me a photo of the “set up” so I’m going to have a go at it, although I find abstract very difficult, not the painting of it but the planning…..that part takes me twice as long as the actual painting! Good luck, hope you enjoy the challenge.

Thank you Carole; not keen on Van Goch!? I suppose not everyone’s taste. 🙃

Thanks again Fiona. Great that you are still in touch with your old group. Is there a good one where you are now? If not you may have to start one! We moved our group to a different village hall a few miles away from the original because the group was getting smaller and the hall had poor light and not good heating. Since moving this term we have picked up a bunch of new people and more important, good artists, so it all feels much more positive.

I do go to one here, the tutor is a contemporary artist, and is very good, but the group members are mainly at the beginning of their journey. I get frustrated some weeks……and I can’t use oils, health and safety apparently. I miss my old class, I feel I have come to a standstill without Davy’s guidance. I hope you get lots from your new class and location, you sound excited about it.

Difficult to find a decent group isn’t it sometimes? Ours was frankly in danger of going down the pan and very much lacked inspiration, but yes the move and new people has given it a new lease of life. That’s a shame for you: hope you’re able to get motivated again. I always enjoy seeing your work.

Many thanks Ellen and Spencer.

This is great Tessa; I love it! It looks like a really enjoyable challenge.

Thank you Karen, it really was!

An A4 gouache of a well known VG painting. The idea was to paint something in the style of a favourite artist. Quite difficult because you don’t know their process, only the end result. Otherwise an enjoyable exercise. The next challenge is to paint one’s own subject in that style!

About the Artist
Tessa Gwynne

I have returned to painting over the last few years having relocated from Cardiff to the Cotswolds in 2009 and joined the Guiting Power Art Group. Although I did a year's Foundation Course at art college after leaving school, I hadn’t painted much in the interim, except for a few attempts here and…
