Nice painting ;)

Thank you Art, good to see you are back, and hope to see your work soon?

Very nice Tessa.

A lovely old building that would have attracted me for sure! I’m going to make the same comment that I made on your drawing. What is it… well, it’s tonal values of course… convert it to mono and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I haven’t done, but I don’t need to, I can tell instantly! There is almost no obvious direction of light which never helps matters, I would have invented one and given the building some depth! I’m nitpicking as normal Tessa, it’s a good job done her, I’m just making my own observations as you did ask for critique!

Thanks Stephen. Darn Alan! You’re right as usual and I did in fact convert it to mono and didn’t think it was too bad. I did also struggle with the light source. I obviously need to paint more Plein air because if you don’t get things correct at that point, you don’t recover it back at base. School report- could do better! Thank you for your constructive criticism.

Although I know Alan is right, nevertheless, it’s an interesting building and I like your foreground Tessa.

Thank you Carole, welcome words. I know that I do struggle with tones - at least I know what I’m doing wrong, or not doing, so it’s up to me to see if I can do better next time!

Fortunately it’s an easy fix Tessa… and you do know how to fix it! Yes, the foreground is really nicely painted and the perfect ‘lead in’ to the composition!

How nice is this Tess

Thanks again Alan and Heather. I’m already planning another version!

I like this Tessa, and the soft colours, it definitely has the feel of the Cotswolds.

Many thanks Hil, much appreciated.

Nicely done, Tessa. I agree with Alan but anyway it is a lovely composition. Lots of depth in it.

This is superb, Tessa, wonderful brushwork, a joy.

Very beautiful Tessa.

Thank you so much Mia, Willie, Harman and Coral, great to have your comments and encouragement.

Very good Tessa.

Many thanks Denise.

A like you're building Tessa; an interesting one to paint with the lean-to. Lovely greens too.

Many thanks Karen. The greens were a bit tricky but fun!

Thank you Spencer- much appreciated.

I love this as it is. I am attracted by the colours, the composition, the shapes and the brushmarks. I would definitely have it on my wall Tessa.

Thanks Diane. I must admit I looked back at my original photos and found there was. Dry little tonal difference on the building, it maybe I should have invented some!

This 12x10” oil was started en plein air last Thursday when our art group spent the morning there on a lovely warm day. Completed at home with many adjustments needed for this very attractive but tricky building! Comments welcome.

About the Artist

I have returned to painting over the last few years having relocated from Cardiff to the Cotswolds in 2009 and joined the Guiting Power Art Group. Although I did a year's Foundation Course at art college after leaving school, I hadn’t painted much in the interim, except for a few attempts here and…
