Great Grey Shrike ( Approx 7' x 4" ) Gouache on Arches Hot Pressed 140lb paper
Apologies for not posting anything for a while. Family health issues in the weeks running up to Christmas, and decorating have forced a bit of a hold on the art. I have been experimenting with acrylics, both the normal ones and the slow drying Golden Open paints. I was very impressed with the qualities of the open paints, but haven't yet ordered any of my own yet. This painting was inspired by the BBC Winter Watch program recently, where they visited a site where there was a wintering Great Grey Shrike. I started by drawing the bird, and using normal acrylics, but got hopelessy in trouble because I'm not used to the medium. My wife's face said it all when she saw the initial stages...not to mention the words such as " Could you start again in watercolour"?. Rather than do that, I took some wet and dry paper to the acrylic stage, sanded it smooth, and then grabbed my gouache paints and finished it off. My wife likes it now!
