My grandmother and I shared a special bond in our mutual appreciation for language and art, something which kept us connected where others in the family did not perhaps fare as well. By the age of 13, I was pressured to reciprocate her support and affection in more material ways than thank you cards and letters, so set about creating an oil painting for her. Resigned to painting a flower (which I never really liked doing), I experimented with both brush and palette knife to create a small piece for her. When she passed away seventeen years later, I had plain forgotten about my little camellia painting. It arrived in the post with a couple of other items, the family unsure where else to dispose of it. My grandmother's writing was on the back, noting who it was from and when. It now hangs on the wall of my mother's bedroom. “Pink Camellia” (1982), oil on art board, framed 37cm (14.5in) x 42cm (16.5in)
