Etruscan Aulete by Rob Munro
I’ve had a long-held fascination with the mysterious Etruscans. Before their disastrous downfall at the hands of the Latins, they decorated their lavish tombs with depictions of those things they especially valued in life, including parties and festivals, festooned with grapevines surrounded by lots of music and dancing. I made my own plaster and paints using ochres and ground minerals. I painted the piece in about an hour and let it all dry. As I had learnt from previous frescoes, I distressed the surface, chiefly using rocks. Being on a wooden panel, I wasn’t about to try and crack or break the fresco panel, so the distress was kept to pitting and gouging. I never found a buyer for it, so to this day it resides at my mother’s house. Height (including frame): 86cm (33.85in) x width: 68cm (26.7in).
