Lovely pencil sketch Val, the cloth around her is very well done too. Yes my husband too is my art critic and since he is a perfectionist he can be very severe at times.

I love this drawing!

Thanks Lorraine and Nora for the lovely compliments.

Wow, great to see you are getting off the blocks! This is the way to start- in those days students were normally to master the 2 dimensional before launching unto the 3 dimensional. Keep it up. Looking at the face, the thing that strikes me first is the right eye- it is too close to her nose. Apart from that, this is a strong drawing and the shading reveals to me that you'll love the pencil as you use it more! Lovely stuff! Promise me you'll keep this going!

My Val you have been busy whilst I have been away. I love to draw and sketch people. This is an excellent effort. Adebanji makes many marks whilst he sketches - like most artists do when sketching, I also find that very appealing. Well done Val. PS thank you for your comment on the Blue Gondola - I did post a pastel I went to edit the text and somehow deleted it! I shall post again another day.

Thank you Val! we are all beyond happy!

Val, thank you for your comments on the portrait of my daughter. It is very strange came back from holiday struggled and then had some inspiration! I used to love pencil drawing - I haven't done a pure pencil drawing for around 3 years. I sometimes sketch before painting ie portrait - make lots of lines have to rub them out until satisfied then underpaint the outline with a light burnt sienna as a guide. Sometimes I just go straight in which I really love doing - that's when I go all impressionist!

Well done Val, you are indeed very versatile, wish I had your gift.

only just found this ,i think this is a great sketch, i like how you have caught the expression in the eye,s....chris

Val, you have a talent for pencil sketching, the tones are very appealing and the headscarf is very well done. Bit late with this comment but digging back a bit on your gallery, don't think I'd joined then.

Great sketch Val, love her eyes and hand and the scarf, just great xx

Pencil on cartridge paper. Inspired to sketch more by Adebanji and also after visiting this morning an exhibition of drawings by Leonardo Da Vinci at the only Scotish venue. Amazing to think that these drawings have survived since the 15th century. Unfortunately my sketch is taken from a papers weekend suppliment as I had no one to persuade to sit for me! If anybody out there reads the same papers as me they will know that if you compare the original to my sketch, I haven't made the face wide enough. This has just been pointed out to me by my own personal art critic, better known as my other half!

About the Artist
Val Kenyon

I am a self taught artist or, as I like to say, I'm "unrestricted by formal teaching" which probably explains my mish mash of styles. I paint in most media, watercolour, gouache, oil, coloured pencil and my favourite, soft pastels. I'm inspired by the Scottish landscape, nature and animals and…
