Lovely balmy atmosphere

A lovely painting!

What a great example of shades of green and brown and a lovely atmospheric painting too

Lovely work on those greens Peter.

Love the colours.

I love the light and shade in this Peter, simple but very effective

Nice watercolour Peter, like your shadows , greens are always difficult to manage. One technique you could try sometime too get distance, when you are faced with greens as far as the eye can see, is to put a light glaze of French Ulta on the distant hills. I would try it on a practice piece first. I hope this helps

Lovely Peter! A great balance of light , I could just sit under that tree and enjoy the day!!

A soft and soothing landscape , terrific Peter.

Thank you for your helpful comments all of you, Linda, Anne, Heather, Frank, Jenny, Clive, David, Lynda and Fiona. I will try your glazing suggestion David, thank you.

Very good work Pèter, I especially like the cast shadows, curving shadows, curving around the tree trunk.

This is really well painted Peter, isn’t it strange how most people never follow in their father’s footsteps. My father was a very goo motor mechanic, I’m ok but never good enough to do it professionally, still he could never draw or paint very well. You certainly have a talent for the brush and paint I don’t mean the house kind, two very good pieces in your gallery.

I’m pleased you like the shadows. To describe the play of light from a high sun was a primary objective as well as an attempt to suggest distant haze. I think the first aim was better met than the second. My wife allowed it the be hung on our wall so it can not be too bad.

Yes, Paul, this father and son thing! I think my Dad would have liked me to continue in his trade and said as much in his late years. When the opportunity was there he did not convince me that I was good enough. Certainly, at the age of 13, I could not produce work as good as his at the same age; I have some of his junior work and it stuns me every time I look at it. Though I did not have a precocious talent I do have some gained by working at it. I am thankful that I was given an enthusiasm for art and it keeps me motivated now.

Beautiful painting Peter, I can quite understand why your heart belongs here :- )

Like this ...reminds me of my childhood sat beneath a tree on a warm balmy summers day I can almost hear the chimes of an ice cream can in the village below nice work

On a cycle ride, I was taken by this view. The area is Corve Dale in Shropshire and it looks toward the slopes of Wenlock Edge. I would like my ashes to be scattered in this area somewhere as this is where my heart is. It’s a watercolour, one of a tryptych which is presently in our bedroom.

About the Artist
Peter Nickholds

I’ve been around since 1946, always in the same town in the West Midlands. I was about 9 when my Dad pinched my big bedroom on the back; it was big enough to make a studio for him and his employee, John. Dad was a commercial artist but I could not draw as well as him I thought. I did get an O level…
