It all went wrong.

Pretty damn' good, even if it did go wrong; and if it did, I can't see where - otther than that it's a bit on the crepuscular side; lit by the firelight's glow, perhaps - I like it like that, but as you might know, I like the dark and subdued; or even the just plain dark, with sinister bits.

Yet still recognisable as inspired by a Rembrandt.

I’m still impressed despite your views. Nicely dark in my opinion.

Well done, Denise! It is definitely recognisable!!

This is superb Denise - really well drawn

Mistake, error call it what you want , it’s still a fine painting Denise and displays your superb skill .

Still looks good Denise.

Definitely a worthwhile exercise Denise, I think it looks great!

You have all made me feel like it was worthwhile seeing it to it's end. Thanks very much Robert, Tony, Andrew, David, Rachel, Paul, Christine, Russell, Sarah and Sarah.

Aren’t mistakes brilliant. My art personified! Go cat go!,

I think you've handled this really well - it's one of my favourite paintings of his (the way he etched out hair strands is fascinating. This would have been built up with layers of glazes). Anyway, you painting has a lovely moody magic

It definitely hasn't gone wrong. It's instantly recognisable as being a study of Rembrandt's portrait.

Much appreciated Chris, Heather, Martin and Bobbie.

Wow, I love it.

Looks great to me Denise 🥰

Looks good to me too! Pastel can always be altered anyway.

I can see the excellence of it Denise despite the darkness.

Looks like a very good painting to me.

Rembrandt is one of my favourite painters so this caught my eye and I think it's a great job. The original is quite dark too so this is very true to that and the translucency is very well achieved. Maybe a small amount of scumbling or even a tiny bit of impasto with palette knife especially along the right cheek and ear lobe. I like to paint in his manner but I've not done a copy mainly because I'd find it too restricting but also I find darting my eye from reference to canvas very tedious and don't do it much. But I think it's an excellent job and just as good as some other copies of this particular work. Some even from before the 20th century.

Your values are pretty much fantastic and spot on. If you put a few highlights in it could look spectacular. I'm no expert obviously I just go on abit about anything to do with an old master. They are a joy to me and I'm ott in my enthusiasm.

I was doing a bit of self study with regards to Rembrandt's self portraits. After reading about them, I decided to do a bit of practice. My favourite portraits of him, are at the age of 23 and 51. I did a study but it went wrong, I didn't quite get the shape of the face or the colours to start off with and I was going to give up but decided to try and finish what I had started. Still, practice is practice. Soft pastel.
