What a view Marjorie! A real feeling of distance with a lovely sky.

How lovely is this Marjorie, a really good painting

Very expressive piece Marjorie with impressive distance work. I love your mark making in the foreground.

Superb Marjorie, great depth and I love how you've done the foreground.

You’ve ended up with the horizon a third of the way up the canvas, which always seems to look balanced of course - and a stunning recession in that wonderful sky is the end result! Great job Marjorie…

Thanks a lot everyone. When I started it on Sunday ( en plein air) I put too much detail in and, as I said, the horizon was in the top third. This morning I gave up and took a big brush and scrapped it. How glad I was that I did! An hour and a half max, I kept a bit of the foreground and ended up with a much better painting.

Well done Marjorie, superb sky.

Just beautiful, love it !!

Looks great Marjorie. Northumberland is big sky country and you've got it!

Super painting Marjorie.

Lots of rhythm, Marjorie, very nice

Stunning work Marjorie, that sky goes on forever.

Just a beautiful painting Marjorie, the foreground grasses are perfect.👍

This fills me with nostalgia Marjorie. Many a happy hour I have spent roaming around those hills. You have captured the wild beauty of the place perfectly.

Love this, Marjorie 👏👏👏

Wonderful dramatic sky Marjorie so I think you did the right thing.

Very nice painting. I wonder if the feeling/attitude you had when scrapping the first version (or rather, starting the this one) can be channelled? Freedom of approach is so fundamentally important, and this is a good result for many reasons in terms of the resulting image qualities.

Looks like this ended up well Marjorie, great feeling of distance, aided by the lovely shadow on those hills on the left.

A wonderful windswept view!

Your eye is really drawn into the distance, wonderful!

Thank you everyone for the great comments!

So full of vigour with your bold approach. It’s a cracker Marjorie

And you still kept the depth - despite or because of lowering the horizon; useful thing to know; looking around at my stuff, nearly (though not quite) all have high horizons - I needed a nudge to a new approach, so will try the same.

Robert, out of interest I looked through my “ landscapes”. I would say that the majority don’t have the horizon at the bottom third…I do like skies though, so, like you, I might consider this factor more.

This started out with horizon near the top…it seemed to take ages to work out the recession. Today I slapped some paint on it and took the horizon right down - much better and so quick! Oil on canvas.
