Rhapsody failure comp

Well, it looks pretty good to me Lew! Great figures and design.

It says New York to me Lewis.

I am in awe of your piano player- the drawing of his hands and all the keys on the piano!

I can hear you shouting Lewis. It's got to work for the artist, I know all about that, but the viewer often sees something different. I see something pretty good.

I like it though!

Thanks for the positive feedback. Christine, the piano player is a copy of a photo of Gershwin, although I changed the piano. So it's a straightforward copy, not something I made up...luckily it came out OK, they don't always.

One of my favourite pieces of music Lew. We all have work that we feel doesn’t translate into what’s in our minds, but there’s a lot to commend this, and it shows your high standards that you didn’t follow through. Most of us would probably have been delighted, but then we’re not capable of producing the delights that you do!

Great expressions Lewis.

It is still a great painting Lew with you excellent pen work standing out . Had you have posted it without saying people would think it’s excellent with it is. I think Lew Cooper you beat yourself up to much my friend , and are such a perfectionist with your work. Bet you only see the wrong line or the line your not happy with when looking at your work, you are a brilliant artist Lew.

Well I think it’s great Lewis!

Oh Lew, it may not shout to you about where you had intended to take it, but it certainly speaks to your many followers. Who needs New York? I once read that the idea came to Gershwin on a train to Boston.

Do we ever think 'it works absolutely' when we finish a piece Lewis? In your mind's eye perhaps not but it certainly does for me the viewer.

I always saw the "Rhapsody" as a night-time thing Lew. I reckon just the two musicians would have worked with the city skyline as background, and let their expressions tell the mood. Either way, it's far too good to abandon.

If I could produce something even quarter as good and imaginative, I'd be over the Moon! I think this is Brilliant, Lewis! Don't bin it!

It works for me Lew. I’m glad you put the clarinetist in, who does the intro. I love the cityscape - immaculate. George is brilliant and the way his keyboard is escaping, not to mention flappers, policeman, spivs et al. No need to beat yourself up. Just brilliant.

Super work, Lewis - I love the flappers!

Think you are too hard on yourself Lewis, it works for me !

It certainly works for me. Brilliant. If only we could hear and see music like this again on the media.

Well I can hear the music looking at this Lew!

Thanks very much to everybody for your encouraging comments. I should know by now you can't paint the picture inside your head...it's always a different picture.

I think it's great as well Lewis!

I say that too. I think its brilliant Lewis. Worth finishing for sure.

Well I love it Lewis!

An attempt at Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue'...written in 1924. Unfinished, because it wasn't working for me. Didn't plan it, just went for it. Wrong! It doesn't SHOUT New York. Should have masses of skyscrapers, yellow cabs and traffic as well as people. Couldn't find a way to get it all in. Small pic shows Gershwin against photo to see if I like that idea...I don't. The shifting spaghetti shape is supposed to show music. So it joins other failures. No big deal. It happens.

About the Artist
Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
