Apparently this book is the second-best selling narrative book of all time, with 200 million+ sold. The best selling book is Don Quihote at 500 million+. (Books like the Bible and Quran have sold more.)

Clearly you have captured her just as the guillotine is about to drop. Her concentration is great

That look on he face is quite riveting, Lewis! Another wonderful Dickens' character!!

Now that’s a serious pose. This changes your work dramatically, from cartoon to impression. It’s all you ever had to do! Brilliant

It is the best of caricatures, it is certainly not the worst of caricatures. Wonderful portrayal.

What an interesting fact Lewis and a great depiction. I think it's an excellent to start knitting something like this - I can think of endless names in the public eye I would put on my list!

A superb character Lew , it could be used in any book as a fine illustration. There is the look of concentration on her face that’s masking some evil thoughts.

Wouldn't like to meet her on a dark night, brilliant character.

Once again this is just brilliant Lewis.

You do Dickens so very well Lew! I’ve suddenly gone off my knitting. 😉

Dickens is serving your vision well, Lew - so many characters you need never run out: and you show no sign of doing so.

Thanks for your comments. Always valued. I think I like these characters because they lend themselves to caricature…which of course is what these drawings are. Yes, there is no shortage of them. I discovered a Dickens website listing over 1500 of them. I’ll do a few more before my interest wanes for now…but it’s a theme to come back to when stuck.

Brilliant impression and caricature of Madame Defarge,, yes you really captured her exactly how Dickens expressed , her sadist look and evil look on her eyes,,her pipe too, and hands while knitting, excellent work Lewis!

Interesting history...wow, she looks evil!

What a fantastic illustration of Madame Defarge. I'm sure Mr Dickens would be as impressed with your portrayal of his characters as the rest of us are Lewis.

You have done those hands really well Lewis and the colouring fit the character beautifully.

Personally, I think she's giving someone the evil eye. Great fun.

Absolutely brilliant!

You have caught the essence of the character. Fantastic drawing and expression Lewis. Thanks for the information.

Fantastic illustration.

Agree with all the comments, brilliant !

Great depiction of Madame Defarge -do hope we get to see your version of Miss Havisham from Great Expectations -but Bill Sikes and Bullseye his dog, might be more your thing.

The pitiless revolutionary who sits knitting an apparently endless scarf, on which she lists the names of those aristocrats she thinks should be guillotined.

About the Artist
Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
