They all look lovely to me, Lewis though I like the middle one best!

Lovely to have you back Lewis, and I like these paintings. Beautiful facial expressions.

They are all really well drawn Lew and any could have been posted individually without your explanation. I’m pleased to see all three and be able understand what you have changed, the final result may not be what you initially intended but it’s still come through well..

They’re all beautifully drawn Lewis. I think we’re all quite critical of our work when it doesn’t turn out how we imagined it.

For me personally Lew, I like all of them… I’m seeing much talent on show in this trio of illustration style drawings!

Interesting to see your process and changes in these Lewis. You are very honest in your self criticism of your work. I prefer the centre one also, probably it is more defined than the one on the left. Her hair is excellent and I like the dress pattern, not too big for me. I think you’ll grow to like it more! At least you produced something yesterday unlike me, but off to art group today so hopefully will do a masterpiece. 🤣

Thank you for your comments. Paintings not coming out as I'd hoped is nothing new for me (as most of us, I expect), just lately I'd had too many false starts and given up. As this was drawn on decent paper, that put up with me messing about, I kept going to get some kind of result.

Don’t be so critical of yourself Lewis. They all look fantastic to me. Don’t know how you do such brilliant work all the time.

Lew, I suspect if you had been Michelangelo and painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling you would have been the only person in the world to think it wasn't quite right.

All your artwork is superb as always, alot of us only wish we were half as good 👍

I like every variation and agree with Anne!

I like all of them Lewis, my favourite is the middle one.

It’s hard being a perfectionist! They are all beautiful.

Often Lewis when we think its bad, we put it away and when we come back we see oh its not so bad after all.

I like them all, although the middle one is my favourite.

Love the end result. Good save!

Thanks very much for your comments and encouragement. I'd got as far as the first picture and stopped, thinking I'll start afresh. Later, I decided to carry on with it...stage 2 (the middle pic), I finished the top area and changed colours on the dress...still not happy...so I finished it with the changes in the final version. I'm not really beating myself up about it, this happens all the time. You HAVE to be self-critical. As I'd taken photos of the first two stages, I thought it might be of interest to post it as above.

Three classical paintings of variations on a theme. Love all three.

Well I like all three Lewis. I agree entirely about being 'self critical' but I'm not sure how objective we truly are at times, perhaps a little too harsh occasionally?

I don’t think we can be objective about our own work - is it an oxymoron I wonder… never mind, Russell’s right, we are too self critical. All are good, I wonder what made you alter the second? If it was a full figure I think it would be easier to judge….

Sounds like a typical day in my life. If we aren’t self critical we don’t improve but if we are over critical we end up destroying the good parts. When to stop is always the Artist’s dilemma. I like the left dress and the rest of the central best

A agree with Anne. Although they are all good the middle one is my favourite!

They are beautiful Lewis, I like all of them

Wanted to paint a pic in art nouveau style. Intended to draw sinuous shapes around the woman, wobbly hands wouldn't let me. Made shapes on dress too big...should have spotted this before I inked them in. Kept going because I've abandoned too many pics just lately. Decided to crop the pic, and painted black ink over the dress. OK-ish, but not what I set out to paint. Might like it more later.

About the Artist
Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
