I have really enjoyed looking at your gallery John and look forward to visiting your exhibition next month in Oswestry. I live fairly close by and just wish the market could return to the lively and colourful event that you have managed to capture here. Good luck at the Library.

Wow so much detail, a lot of work gone into all those bricks and pavers, fantastic painting.

Yes so much detail.... you are very brave. It looks really good !

Lovely style. A lot going on but it really works. Excellent.

Very brave indeed - but you've carried it off well. I did wonder why you used artistic licence to add figures which were not there, but did not use this technique to amend/remove the offending building? I've done 'local' scenes, and removed things like toilet blocks which spoil the view. Far from pointing out 'errors', even those who know the area didn't notice anything was missing.

Interesting point, Lynda. I pondered this whilst planning the painting, and decided that the 60's market hall , thoughquite awful, is still in its way iconic for Oswestry - in its very awfulness ! - It's a bit more fundamental than a toilet block or road signs or litter bins , which I'm constantly editting out of scenes. So to simply remove it would strike Oswestry citizens as too visually strange - stranger than simply minimizing its visual impact by choosing a viewpoint from which it is largely hidden - and remember the painting has been done specifically as part of my solo exhibition IN OSWESTRY in January - so the target audience will notice outright removal (Unlike the 18th century viewers of Venice scenes by contrast who never got to see how radically artists had moved the architecture around). Anyway the good news is that the Market Hall is currently due a major makeover - fingers firmly crossed it aint worse !

Typically busy scene with your vivid bright pallete John

I have just completed this action filled painting of Oswestry market day - from studies and photos done in September this year. It will be the "local interest" component of a small solo exhibition I'm putting on in Oswestry Library throughout January 2010. It was quite hard to get a single viewpoint in Oswestry which captures a view of nice buildings - even the impressive town hall in the market square is compromised by a simply ghastly 60's covered market you can just see peaking over the market stalls in the upper right of the painting ! I've also added in a few extra tented stalls ( and pretty girls)in my composition as the actual market is rather more sparsely attended nowadays than my painting suggests - such is the advantage of the artistic viewpoint compared to reality ! Painting is 24 inches by 24 inches by 1.5 inches on deep box canvas.
