Lovely painting Hilary. I'm not sure if there is a softer yellow than lemon yellow. Perhaps you could try with a weak thin layer first, allowing that to dry, then adding more yellow in places that you feel need it. Not sure if the W&N lemon is softer than the Windsor lemon.

A lovely painting, I use Royal Talens Van Gough Lemon yellow watercolour paint and find it can be used really thin and give a lovely colour. As already suggested I build it up rather than do a one thicker layer . I was bought a box of Van Gough paints and found a few of their colours I preferred to W & N Cotman series that I use most of the time .

Nicely done indeed Hilary agree with Alan and Paul.

Can't advise on watercolour but it's very good!

A beautiful painting, Hilary!!

Beautiful confident watercolour Hilary, super treatment of the tree canopy.

Beautifully painted Hilary.

Thank you Alan and Paul for your helpful comments and the advice on yellow - I will try Van Gogh Lemon Yellow. Thank you Chris, Heather, David, Spencer, Fiona and Diane for your lovely comments, they are very encouraging.

Lovely painting, brings back happy memories of Herefordshire where I trained as a teacher. As far as softer yellows go, maybe try Aureolin, but as a Series 4, W&N, it's expensive! Makes gorgeous soft greys mixed with Cobalt blue and a touch of Magenta!

Thanks Thalia, think I have some Aureolin somewhere, but haven't used it much, but will have a try with it.

A watercolour painted after a walk to Shobdon Church, Herefordshire, yesterday. With the aid of a photograph taken at the time. The yellow is W&N Winsor Lemon, and it's not quite soft enough for me. Any other yellow suggestions?
