I really enjoy looking at your pen and wash . The bold mix of lies and the lovey variation in wash strength is so eye catching.

Beautiful painting Fiona. Your pen and wash work very well. Good composition.

Thank you Jim, Jennifer, Malcolm, Dennis, Alan.....yes get planting, would like to see what you could do with flowers in your style! Many thanks Dermot, Diana. Thank you Carole, I appreciate your comment and that you are yourself appreciative of food plants for bees, moths and butterflies, in fact all insects. Most of my garden is planted for them. The melancholy thistle is another fabulous food plant, for the bees especially. I think the blue is Phthalo blue. It's in a small palette of Windsor & Newton half pan set that someone gave me. It's very rich and a creamy consistency....and strong! Many thanks Dennis and Ibolya!

Thank you very much Cesare!

Your quick pics are brill.

Thank you Fiona, I have that colour but not used it for a while I will have to get it out now as your painting shows it up beautifully. Yes it is strong but makes clear greens. My butterfly bush is doing well for butterflies this year, I saw a comma, loads of red admirals, a wall butterfly and speckled wood. Hoping for the peacocks to appear along with tortoiseshells. I found a lovely Cardinal beetle down the garden last month :)

A beautiful piece Fiona and a lovely composition, I like the pen and wash.

That's a fine collection of butterflies Carole, I had about half a dozen painted ladies earlier on in the summer this year, they hung around for a couple of weeks. Some years we get some years not. I have left about a quarter of an acre of the garden to go wild, it's field grass so there are lots of native wild flowers and grasses in it which attract the meadow butterflies like the ringlets and gate keepers, as well as the meadow browns....and lots of crickets and grasshoppers!

Thanks very much Pete! Thank you Margaret, have you tried pen & wash with your flower subjects?

12 x 9 quick sketch in watercolour and ink of a handful of flowers I grabbed on my way in from the garden this evening. They look lovely growing together in a large patch.
