happy birthday Fiona love the distant horizon hills and muted colours the foreground leads the eye in nicely to that grass coloured hill .love the overall aerial perspective that patch of light blue top rt really adds to the scene

Fiona,I see more colour in your watercolour here. Do you think your pastel work has influenced you colour a bit? Have a good tea as well.

Beautiful painting, Fiona, great aereal perspective. Beautiful background with hills and sky.

It's lovely Fiona. Everything's nicely done and it's very pleasing to the eye. Happy birthday.

David thank you, it was a couple of weeks ago but thanks again! X Yes John, I think using the pastels has brightened up my palette, I've still only used four colours though! Many thanks Cesare, appreciate your comment.

Your pen work is missing Fiona, but that in no way stops you producing a lovely little landscape, great pallett, soft yet has impact. I know you said your horizon is in the middle of the paper, but the way you have used the brush marks seem to push the land mass beyound the middle. I like the minimal foreground objects and that is a great active sky, nice one Fiona.

Lovely painting Fiona. I really like your spontaneous style . To be honest I never noticed the horizon being central so there must be enough going on not to be bothered.

Lovely painting which I hope reflects the day you've had on your birthday.

Beautiful painting - colours are so calming. Your Birthday lunch sounded lovely.

Very soothing

Thank you very much Malcolm, Brian, Gudrun, Donna and Peter for your lovely comments.

Lovely Fiona. I don't think it matters where the horizon line is, does it? It looks good so it must be ok.

Lovely Fiona, beautiful colours and great technique

Happy birthday Fiona. Hope you had a great day. Splendid work. Great composition.

This does look brighter than your usual work Fiona, perhaps the pastel experience has influenced you a little, I always feel switching media occasionally helps my work. If you turn the work sideways, you will see that the land area is quite a bit narrower than the sky, these 'rules' we are told are not written in stone and the old masters often broke them in their work.

Love those confident dry brush strokes and perfect sky Fiona!

This is great, Fiona. There is a lot of depth in it, even with the horizon line in the middle. And "better late than never": happy birthday! :) Mia

I never noticed the line until you said Fiona but it does not detract from the beauty of this watercolour. Happy Birthday belatedly x

Absolutely beautiful, Fiona!

Just lovely Fiona....have indulged in a few pastels but my first attempt is very heavy handed...not ready to post yet!

Thanks ever so much everyone for taking the time to comment on my work, it's very much appreciated!

Thank you very much Margaret.

Looks like it was a beautiful sunny day on your birthday Fiona, belated birthday greetings :)

Beautifully done, Fiona! I love the sky and the distant hills that have a slight touch of warmth to them. The rocks and wood in the foreground create a wonderful sense of depth and dimensionality to the scene. I've been away for a bit but my warm and somewhat belated birthday greetings!

Val, Wib.....you are both very kind thank you for your comments and birthday wishes...it was a couple of weeks ago, I took the photo on my birthday. X

Lovely sky, land and water Fiona in your Scottish hues. Happy belated birthday :)

Many thanks Sarah!

Watercolour on Arches. Carse Gut is a body of water that forms part of the Nith Estuary, the river Nith flows through Dumfries and out into the Solway Firth. The Carse Gut splits off from the Nith and hugs the western shore of the Estuary at Carsethorn. I took the photo from the Steamboat Inn, where I had a very nice birthday lunch. I've just noticed my horizon line is in the middle.....
