Fiona it doesn't look overworked to me perhaps a bit of cross hatching but to me it looks good .Put it to one side and look at it again in a few days .I like the overall composition and balance i also like the graphic work

Beautiful pen and wash again, Fiona

Agree with David Fiona. My thought is the arch under the bridge might have worked better with a dark wash of watercolour with a touch of that reflected in the water.

It's a lovely little sketch Fiona, your normal basic colours which always work, yes, the bridge needs a dark wash on it, not cross-hatching though, it can look awful.

A lovely pen and wash Fiona. Nice colours.

Hi again Fiona. Just read the comments and , though I am no pen and wash expert, I agree that the bridge would look better with a wash underneath. Cross hatching would be too much and just give you a black hole on your page.

Fiona! We walked past this little bridge at the end of May! We thought how pretty it was. The weather that day was 22+ and I painted Balcary Bay from the beach. It makes it special to see your sketch - Good to get Alan and John's advice.

Good idea David, I'll put it away and look at it again with fresh eyes....thank you. Jennifer, John, Alan, David, thanks very much for your input.....I think the wash may improve it a little, I'll try it out when I look at it again. Marjorie it's lovely to think I've done something you recognise from your visit, it's a lovely walk to the beach and only a 20 minute drive away. What did you think to St Ninian's cave? Thank you for your comment.

Fiona, we couldn't help but think that when Ninian was there, the usual temperature would have been vastly different! But it was quite sheltered so I could imagine him lighting a fire and being quite cosy in that cave. Can you believe it though, the day we were there we had to shelter from the sun!

Lol Marjorie....you caught us on a good day! It was very pleasant yesterday down there actually, not too hot. Now that the holiday season is here there are lots of drft wood crosses, messages written on pebbles and gifts of all kinds of things left as tokens. Come the first rough tide and they will all disappear....until the next lot!lol

I think you have done this one before or am I mistaken? Gorgeous everything, but you are right about under the bridge. It needs to be DARK and scary.

I love the brick/stonework of the bridge and the lovely delicate tree in the background Diana

I forgot to say that I agree about a dark under bridge wash.

Love these old bridges Fiona, reminders of long ago times. No don't start again this is so informative, nicely done!

Hi Gudrun, I've done St. Ninian's bridge which is at the bottom of the field and the Roman bridge but this is a first....and last I might add, of this one!!!lol Dark and scary it is then....thanks Gudrun. Diana, Carole thanks very much for your encouragement, I'm going to darken it and see how that looks.

A little darkening - definitely and then I fantastic painting.

Wonderful textures and colours, full of atmosphere..... I love your gallerys

You blend the colours in so well Fiona. You have a fine touch, quite unlike my clumsy marks.

Superb Fiona.

Thank you very much Adele and Ruthy........hope to rectify the bridge! Michael, thank you. Fine touch? I would say I'm heavy handed with use of colour and application.....lol I wouldn't describe your work as clumsy, if it is, I like clumsy! Many thanks Henry!

As always I love the freshness of your work, Fiona. I'm not familiar with the areas you paint or draw but they all have energy and vibrancy that reach to images stored away somewhere in my own memory. I suppose every image can be improved but I sometimes think that the vision you first had when you did the drawing in this case could be lessened. There's something to be said for the power of that first impression that is lasting regardless of its possible frailties.

I've been away for a few days Fiona so missed this posting. What can I say.. it's good, but the shading under the bridge doesn't work and yes, I am smiling a little :) Today's 'improved version' is indeed improved and very good as well!

Many thanks Wib for your feedback, I'm pleased that some of my scenes bring memories of your own to the fore. Louise...or should I say, Nemesis....you're a cruel woman, smiling at my attempt at 'bridge desensitisation' therapy...lol Thanks!

..not so much smiling, I was actually grinning...I'm afraid that your bridges, however good they are, have that effect on me now :)

Lol Louise!! I'll try to keep you entertained but might limit it to just a couple a year!!lol

I don't think it's overworked, Fiona. There's a very spontaneous feel to it, it's lovely!

Beautiful pen and wash as always, Fiona.

Thank you both very much, Seok and Cesare.

14"x10" pen & wash on Arches. Walked to St. Ninian's cave yesterday and this small bridge is on the woodland path that leads down to the beach at Port castle bay.....it was packed, at least a dozen people there. I didn't take my paints, I did this from the photo I took....which is probably why it's so overworked. I don't think the mouth of the bridge is right, it's totally black in the photo but I didn't want to make it solid ink. Not sure whether to put a dark wash on it or just cross hatch the ink to darken it a little more. Any ideas......I know, start again.....lol. I really should leave bridges well alone!
