I honestly can't think of anything cruel to say Fiona - I'm trying. ( very trying some would say!) perhaps a variation in the foreground green - a slightly warmer one?

Fiona your handling of different greens is improving all the time .the lighter green is not acid it glows as if lit by sunlight carry on as you are with your experimentation .This is one of your better paintings everything about it is glowing in tonal harmony. That distant blue horizon really works you are on the right track with more variation keep taking your greens ! I would say mix your own greens as well as using say a couple of greens from the tube say viridian and emerald and use a couple of different yellows .I rarely use lemon , chrome yellow is good also naples yellow is a cool yellow thats what I use anyway x

There are a great many shades of green in nature so it is good to vary them. I seem to recall beig told not to have main lines coming from the corners of a painting but then rules are meant to be broken. A good feeling of distance in this work. I like the shape of the gate post, like a pawn.

Lol, thanks Marjorie. Got it, warm the foreground greens up a bit. I used lemon yellow for some of these greens David, that's what I thought may be making the lighter greens look on the acid side. I don't have any tube greens....only in oils. I'll be okay when Autumn and winter come again, I can revert back to my raw sienna...lol. However it doesn't really give convincing spring/summer greens....unfortunately. Thank you very much for taking the time over your comment, it's been very helpful.

Can't imagine anyone being cruel to you Fiona. It's funny how we can have a lovely view in front of us, yet home in on something small and perhaps insignificant. This looks lovely to me.

I like your light greens Fiona but if you want to have a warmer feel into the picture you could give it an overall wash with a warm yellow. It would also perhaps be a good idea to darken the fence but not touch the upper slabs witch will stay very light. X

I think you have the greens right Fiona. The perspective and regression are right too. I'm hardly one able to give advice but I do trust my instincts and they're telling me that the balance is a little awry in the wall. I feel the shape is right but that the colours somehow don't work for me. Is there too much blue in the wall perhaps? Or too much white? It needs toning down I think, with a light wash, perhaps a watery green and burnt umber? If you spoil it on my advice I'll come up there and throw myself off the wall. It will be a messy end but at least I won't have it on my conscience to haunt me every day of my life.

I like that light fresh green Fiona it looks great with the dark pen work. No not acid, lovely!

Another beauty Fiona. Don't beat yourself up too much.

Nice painting Fiona smashing work well done.

Always lovely Fiona. I do love the subdued colours and receding detail.

Beautifully done Fiona. :)

I can feel the sun and it's light flowing through your being Fiona top notch

Lovely work, Fiona. Personally, I would cover the foreground with a warmer yellowish green: warm green in the foreground and your beautiful cooler greens in the background. I am not cruel, am I? lol :) Mia

A lovely pen and watercolour Fiona,

Many thanks Stepehen, Adele, Satu.....I'm going to try a warm-ish wash over the left foreground grass, thanks for the tip Satu. Michael, I think you're right too much white, I may bring the left burnt umber shrubby thing down a bit further and blend it into the white part of the wall. Don't do anything drastic if it goes all wrong....it's only a piece of paper...lol Carole, Cesare, Dennis, many thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. And I'm going to stick with this light green for now I think....thanks.

Henry, Gudrun, Keith, Dennis, David, Mia......you wouldn't know how to be cruel, I'm very sure of that. Thanks to you all for your encouragement. X

I am a bit late in seeing this Fiona but like it a lot, I would agree with Margorie about the foreground otherwise I think you have the balance of greens quite good, I think a major failing is that people do not see all the variants of green in the landscape. I know what you mean about the gate post, we have quite a few like that around here with the old churches and some of the older big houses and farms. Nice one as always it has worked well.

It seems to be the more unusual and unexpected items found in the landscape that appeal to me. I may experiement with another yellow blue mix to see what I come up with but this one, I think I will try a warmer wash over the foreground and see if that helps. Thank you for your observations Malcolm, much appreciated.

think this is a lovely fresh painting ,I can,t pick a fault with it .wish I could paint the same

So bright and summery Fiona especially that lighter green, not acid at all.

Thank you very much Anne and Val.

You are so good at these pen & wash paintings, Fiona! this is another winner! xx

Nice depth to this Fiona and I like how you have painted the stone wall.

Lovely airy feel to this, Fiona. For landscapes one of the mixes I like to use is the range of greens you can get mixing Payne's Gray with lemon yellow or the cadmiums. I'm sure you know that and use it yourself. To my eye this scene looks a little cold, maybe a few touches of some warmer greens might help? I don't think that light green is too acid, it just needs some deeper, warmer greens to balance it in my opinion.

Jennifer you are always so generous with your comments, thank you. Thank you very much Sarah, much appreciated. Caroline, I don't think I've ever tried P grey with L yellow. I'll make a point of giving that a bash in my next attempt at a 'green' scene! Thank you for the advice, appreciate you taking the time.

16" x 12" pen and watercolour on jackson's rough paper. This gateway is across the lane from the church and looks out over the Cree Estuary and mud flats. It was actually the cast gate post that attracted me, rather than the view. But, it has given me the opportunity to practice yet more green's. I would like advice with regard to; the amount of variations, am I including too many different greens? Also, is the lighter green too acid looking. I would like to get a balance/harmony through the painting, to me it doesn't work , and it's over worked. I'm using more colours than I normally would and also different colours. Any advic/crit would be welcolme.....I'm not the sensitive type, just incase you want to be very cruel!lol
