Rievaulx Abbey, Ryedale

It seems everywhere you go up here, there’s a sign telling you that JMW Turner got here first and already painted it….Rievaulx is no exception, and it’s interesting to compare his painting (easily found online) with the scene as it is today; he made the hills a lot bigger and craggier than the truly are, to make the scene more dramatic, and the river is visible. Anyway, here’s my version. Watercolour on Bockingford 14x10"
