You have done a good job with these David.

I've done a good few of this type of exercise in my younger days, I've still got pages of them in a folder somewhere. As I recall, the idea is to draw an object, any object on the planet by using shading and NO hard edges. You've got a hint of a hard edge on the top right DB, but a pretty good effort.

I wasn't limiting myself to no hard edges, I think bubbles have hard outer edges and reflections may have too but inside they are very soft gradation. Still a new experience though, and I guess the more new experiences I have the more I will learn.

Love this :)

Any sphere will have soft graduated edges DB, never a hard single line, the same applies to reflections. You've got it smack on in the top left drawing. I do know my stuff on this, but I'm not looking for a long protracted discussion. It's a good exercise as I said, and you have done well.

Thanks Alan, I will look to make the lines softer next time then and see how that goes... the top left one I was pleased with... the bubble top right I didn't think was very convincing... I will practice more...

A4 pencil, watercolour. I didn't feel like drawing anything in particular today so I did these tutorials on youtube. These are my first attempts at drawing water but their main use is to practice trying to get smooth gradients in pencil and watercolour. I could have got softer on the watercolour if I had wetted the paper but it isn't watercolour paper and I didn't want the paint to bleed into the white area's too much (they have a tendency to get smaller and smaller) Shading the background makes the reflections look whiter... all good exercise.

About the Artist
D Hillman

Inspired by an artist friend I came back to paint a bit at the end of 2017. At the moment I am enjoying it and maybe because I have the patience to look more than I once did I am finding it easier and more enjoyable to actually produce a likeness.
