That's good, David. It tells me that watercolour is for you. You are starting from a very good standard, and you'll get better.

You are very accurate. Watercolour is tricky as mostly once it's on the paper you can't get rid of it easily. I think we all started like this. Once you become confident with it you'll surprise yourself. Watercolour always dries very much lighter so bear that in mind. This is a lovely pose. I particularly like the hand on the left.

I saw Alan's advice - I agree with it, and it's good, but I just wonder if you're the type to want to take things slowly! You give me the impression of one who wants to get stuck in and get on with it. I agree, perhaps more, with Lewis: I think both of your watercolours show great promise and suggest that this could be the ideal medium for you - your use of gentle, clear washes in this one (and the previous one), your colourful palette, show a feel for watercolour which some of us (hallo!) really haven't got, or haven't got naturally. I have to work hard at watercolour, it's not a medium I consider myself to have mastered; I think you have a better chance of so doing than I do.... But anyway, do both - have a splosh around on bits of paper, make mixes, experiment with washes, but if you want to start and finish a project as well, there's nothing to stop you. This has impact - I went and clicked on it before I knew you had painted it, because it just jumped the page.

This is lovely, David. I agree with what Gudrun said, watercolour is unforgiving. Keep going and do some experimenting with colours.

A4 watercolour, this one I built up in several dilute layers... maybe I was a bit tentative leaving lots of white paper. Alans advice earlier is probably correct that I should be splashing about experimenting rather than trying to produce something.

About the Artist
D Hillman

Inspired by an artist friend I came back to paint a bit at the end of 2017. At the moment I am enjoying it and maybe because I have the patience to look more than I once did I am finding it easier and more enjoyable to actually produce a likeness.
