Love it Barry...you've had more success with wash over pencil than me. Did you seal the drawing before adding the wash?

I'll be very interested in this Barry, having done the same with grandchildren and various family members. Some have been more successful than others but in every case I felt I'd captured something of them. But the best of all , one which everyone agreed about, was the "portrait" , full face, of my daughter's cat. Going back to your watercolour, does your granddaughter recognise herself?

Lovely portrait, Barry. I've not thought of doing wash over pencil. It gives a more subtle effect.

Hi Lewis, no I didn’t fix the pencil but I was very careful not to go in too strong with the colour and build it up to get darker while it was still wet.

Thank you Marjorie and Seth. Marjorie I am waiting on the big verdict I sent my daughter the image earlier and I am sure we will get a reaction from mum, dad, brother and no doubt from herself. I also have mixed results with family paintings especially when they are very young.

Well done Barry, I've been drawing a few of my GD's recently and it ain't easy - for one, they can't keep still!

Totally agree Alan, I had to take a photo, if I try to draw her from life she grabs my pencil and sets about a drawing of her own.

It’s gorgeous, Barry. I’ve recently sketched my granddaughters for the Adebanji competition, I somehow seem to lose the features when I paint them, either being too tight or too loose, then I’m disappointed.

Thank you Ellen, I think disappointment is par for the course when painting grandchildren especially when they are very young.k

Very appealing indeed.

It looks good. It's hard painting family members as they never seem to see themselves as you see them. It is also so hard trying to get an accurate look and at the same time keep the painting reasonably fresh. Hope the family like your work. - it is a good idea working on it first and then trying again when you know where to go.

Superb drawing, Barry. Love it!

It looks great Barry, hope you get a good reaction from the family!

Thank you Sandra, Maureen, Thalia and Margaret, haven’t yet heard from the family but as you all like it I am hopeful.

A pencil drawing with a little watercolour added of one of my granddaughters. Trying to get a likeness before trying a more considered attempt in either oils or watercolour or maybe both.

About the Artist
Barry Hulme

I started painting in 2004, I am influenced by Wesson, Seago and many of the great masters, more recently I enjoy the work of Steve Hall, John Hoar and Alvaro Castignet to name but a few. I paint in a loose style and try to simplify as I can. The medium I enjoy most is watercolour but dabble with…
