Storm Approaching, Coast Of Galloway

Packs a punch! I love the excuberant use of oils. Which of Fiona's painting inpsired it?

Alan, my version is considerably pale and tame in comparison, but what an impact this has! Lively and energetic colours and brush work......it definitely has that stormy atmosphere! Love it! How do you keep your white so clean when painting wet like this, did you add with a brush or knife?

Thanks Gudrun, it was Fiona's Galloway Coast. I did have a lot of fun painting this one, I was a bit short on ideas today, plenty of work in progress but waiting for drying, this coastline looks so raw and rugged I could hardly resist having a go.

Glad you like it Fiona, yes it is more expressive than your calmer version but yours is equally interesting. I'll send it to you when its dry if you would like it!

Woo-hoo..... On the Forum, I've got into a discussion about exaggerated colours in paintings, and have indicated that I prefer my colour controlled and de-saturated. This might have been misunderstood, so I'm glad you've posted this. You have exaggerated all sorts of things here - colour, texture, movement - but it works because it's genuinely felt: you've not done it to flog product, I'm quite sure: and that's been my feeling about some of the new Scottish colourists, in particular, who seem to have one eye on potential sales when they should have both on creating an effective painting. Your eye was on the effective painting, and I can see that without much effort. I wish I thought that theirs was too - but I suppose we all have to make a living. I just wish they hadn't lost sight of honest painting in the process of making it.

I don't believe in their paintings: I do believe yours.

Thanks Robert, I hoped this work would invoke some interest and criticism and I totally agree with you, many artist's are painting to please their buyers and lose sight of their creativity in doing so. No, this wasn't painted to sell, I'm giving it to Fiona.

Wonderful expressive painting, Alan, showing the quality of oils in all their glory.

Thanks Kevin, much appreciated, this is now hanging on Fiona's wall up in Galloway, where it belongs.

Love the honesty in this work, the heavy paint works for me too.

Beautiful, and not just because i live on the galloway coast.
