Lovely work Alan reminds me of the great Rowland Hilder type of landscape ... Excellent

Lovely watercolour Alan - especially love the sky. I like your strong tones as it gives a depth and atmosphere which is hard to achieve.

This reminds me of Rowland Hilder style Alan. I like your washes in the sky.

Sorry Dermot, seem to have copied your comment! ( great minds think alike!) ;)

Heavenly sky Alan! Did you layer the washes, it's very effective and a wonderful backdrop to the rest of the composition.

Thank you everyone, and yes Fiona although it was painted on Turner Blue paper I still used 4 separate washes, waiting for each one to dry of course before proceeding. The final wash being ultramarine with a spot of light red to get some granulation - doesn't work too well though on this paper.

Beautiful! I love your style and palette.

Love the transparency of your washes - I too thought of Rowland Hilder when I first saw the painting, partly because of the subject matter but also because of the clarity of the draughtsmanship. I'm not sure you'd have really wanted too much granulation - maybe the paper did you a favour, because while granulation/flocculation adds a lot of interest, much more than you achieved here could have attracted too much attention and taken it away from your focal point. As it is, the detail in the sky complements the buildings and water, adding just enough of a quirky touch to bring the whole thing to life.

Lovely work once again, when I saw the sky, I thought of Cotman's wahes, another superb water colourist and maybe one of Hilder's inspirations? Again your draughtsmanship skills are clearly in evidence here.

Watercolour on Turner Blue tinted paper from Ruscombe Mill, France. Great paper to work on but does need stretching first. inspiration from various sources inc. photos.
