Art my good friend no time spent painting is a waste of time we may not gain a lot from it but we gain experience and skill every time we try something different or new. It may feel a waste of time but I assure you that you will have gained from the time spent, even if the outcome is won’t do that again, there will be a little bit that you  retain deliberately or accidentally. Chasing clouds is fun but your never going to catch one but the memories are there .
I like that Paul 😁

I like this saying a lot ;) It's like - better do something, than nothing ;) Even if it might be wrong, but not giving it a try is much worse.  Let see where it'll take me eventually Paul. I just have finished blocking in the niece's face ;)
It’s starting to come together and looking good Art . I do like work in progress as I give us the opportunity to see how people work and a little glimpse of what they might be thinking . I haven’t done one for a while and I do enjoy them when I do .

I have 5 days off work, so I'm readily moving forward with the painting ;) I've noticed, that if the paint isn't touch dry, I'm having trouble applying fresh paint strokes... Niece's face was dry today, and I could blend and apply fresh paint without issues. Lesson learnt - wait till it's dry enough ;) So tomorrow I'm about to do eyes maybe, as these blank holes looking strange ;) Don't you think so Paul? ;) I'm keep promising myself - do the eyes, do the eyes - but I'm leaving them behind instead ;)
Don't you just hate it when  carefully worded and tapped out comments  vanish into the ether...grrr mine did. Pog i have been watching this with some fascination your careful and painstaking method of working is so alien to me.  But the results are looking good.  I will be happy when your wife and your niece look less spooky...enjoy.
‘’So tomorrow I'm about to do eyes maybe, as these blank holes looking strange ;)’’ They certainly do look strange Art… Stark white against those dark earth tones! (Which don’t look too convincing but I realise you haven’t finished). That’s why it’s often sound practice to work on a neutral mid-toned ground, and also to work over the whole painting from the outset  - you get a more gentle transition with a degree of cohesion/unity over the whole painting!

Looks like it is coming along well Pog. I've been painting less than 3 years and started with no experience. I have had a lot of priceless advice from the members Alan, Robert, Marjorie and everyone has always steered me in the right direction when I haven't had a clue on how to proceed. I have learned to always tone my canvas, it's much easier to judge your tones. I will usually put the tones in, in grey before using colour.  Robert once put a post up regarding the Zorn pallete and I did an exercise using this pallete that, taught me a lot about skin tone.

I've been there many times Sylvia myself - where I've been writing for long time, expressing my thoughts - and it went missing... It's very rare you may want to put the same amount of effort for second time, isn't it? So I do appreciate you post your comment anyway ;) I've been watching artists drawings, where they were making it like pieces of puzzles, step by step, square by square - so unnatural and not what I'd enjoy... Till now ;) Scott (wadellwebisides on YT) is painting portraits... He's focusing onto details first, shaping noses, eyes as perfectly as he can do at the moment, then he moves to other eye, or mouth... I found it interesting to try Sylvia. This way I painted my self-portrait, and this painting is the second. I've found I am unable to follow 100% Scott's method, as I'm struggling exact colour mixing, what is crucial in here. So I'm trying mimic it and adopt as similar as I can. The efforts you can judge already. Spooky painting - yes, I know it ;) I'm always leaving eyes behind since I remember, even though I don't like doing it! I was told many times before people don't appreciate to see weird look of my faces... I'm hopeless ;) HAPPY NEW 2023 Sylvia and everyone  ;)
In the early stages, you did ask a lot of questions Denise, and you listened and took that advice, and your art developed gradually to the standard of work that you are now turning out…  I’ll be doing a feature on life drawing/portrait painting in a forthcoming edition of The Artist, but adding the extra challenge of working with the Zorn palette! Looking forward to starting this one, just hoping my old college has some life classes running later in the year, and with some interesting models!

Thank you Alan, and YES, I know what you saying  ;) It's just not that easy to overcome your bad habits... I remember my father... The other day I went down the basement to offer my help chopping the wooden trunks. He got annoyed instead of being appreciated... It ended up sending me where I came from  ;) I was chopping those trunks but my way. He didn't like it, he tried to make me do it his way (proper way), which I was struggling to follow... Until he couldn't handle watching me doing so anylonger ;) It's probably my curse  Alan, doing things my weird way ;) Thank you ;)

Thank you Denise, I know you mean. I used to toned surface too. I did it before. This is sort of experiment Denise - the first painting was on toned surface, but this I decided not to. Actually - it is the first painting, that I did begin on blank white canvas, just to see if I can manage... You see... I'm getting back to oils after couple of years of gap. In my mind is nothing but bunch of mixed experiences and information gathered throughout those years... I'm just trying things, new to me, experimenting... I'm trying find myself within the chaos in my mind. I'm aware of Zorn palette too, thank you for keen comment and advice! I do appreciate it a lot Denise ;)
