Alan, I was going to ask the same question as Fiona and Marjorie. (Agree about this challenge being the best yet - shame it’s only for this month, it could probably run indefinitely, the possibilities are endless!).

Re Alan's puzzle.  The nose and the beard put me in mind of Fidel Castro, but I am completely stumped for an artist.

I vaguely recognised the sitter from your first image (think it was mainly the beard) and searched to see if it might be Monet - found that it was and that it was sketched by Manet.  I’ve always loved the Impressionists and it’s surprising what sticks in your memory!

Wow you are all so good at this. I have love seeing the images and enjoyed the banter etc. My knowledge is very poor and this has been very educational and I’ve certainly enjoyed looking at the different artists. I thought I would give it a go , my apologies to the artist and to you for my very poor attempt.  I think that despite my poor and feeble effort I may have chosen the obvious bit of the painting , I’m sure it won’t take long for you  to solve .  It’s my interpretation hence the rubbish painting.

Well it could be one of John Singer Sargent’s watercolours of Venice…then again……I think I’m right because I’ve got his book of Venice paintings.
