Denise - there was another beginner artist on POL - you've reminded me of her; her name is Paulette Farrell (I've probably spelled that all wrong, apologies to her); she started out with a few clearly beginner sketches, asked for advice, got it, took it, and has made huge strides since: because she was prepared, as you are, just to use that advice as her springboard and then - dive right in doing her own thing. She has specialized in figure drawing, quite often from cricket match scenes - all she needed was for a few of us to light the blue touchpaper, to mix my metaphors, and off she went. Sylvia and others might remember her: she does post work in the Gallery sometimes.
It's always a great pleasure to see people who started here making such progress from what they probably thought were unpromising beginnings. I'm glad you weren't disappointed that you didn't get into the final draw of the competition you entered - I bet you were a bit: you're only human (I assume!). But to have got as far as you have given how short a time ago it was that you made a start is truly remarkable. You'll be selling work soon, which is more than I'm able to do at the moment. And I shall be extremely jealous - but in the meantime, salute your hard work and all-consuming curiosity. Your drawing above is coming on very well, and don't worry about crossings out and rubbings out - a few stray lines can give a drawing vigour - I wouldn't even bother to rub them out, unless they were getting in the way and annoying you.

Gillian - like your gorilla skulls and your figure study: tell me more about this coloured charcoal, I'm a bit behind the times on drawing implements. I see you've used a laid paper - like Ingres (double-meaning; he used laid paper, and there's a laid paper named after him). If you've not tried carbon pencils, or conté crayon, I think you'd enjoy them (they have the great adavantage to me of being as cheap as I am, but rather more useful..). You may well know all about them, and as I know I can repeat myself sometimes I hope I haven't suggested this to you before.... but if I haven't, go and seek them out!

Your figure study is very good Gillian and I must have a read up about these tinted charcoal. Thanks Robert, I've been brushing up on anatomy, looking at the muscles under the skin so I can visualise the shapes better. I did sell a painting it went to Scotland and someone in America wanted to buy the Puffin I did in Pastel but I didn't want to part with it. The lady in Scotland asked me where I sell my paintings and I said, I don't really sell them, anyway, I sold her the one she liked and she was very happy with it. I've got to be honest, I never thought I'd be in this position a couple of years ago, entering competitions, people asking me to sell them my artwork, not in a million years. Everyone on the site has helped me move along and given me great advice along the way which, I am always very grateful for.

I also have a Derwent tinted charcoal paint pan set which also gives interesting results. Yes the paper is Ingres … Daler Rowney Pastel Pad. I have used graphite pencils too and like them too . Conte crayons yet to be tried!

I’m a couple of weeks behind so I’m not going to scroll back, but I like your line and wash Gillian. I’m guessing from the green grass that you are in the Orkneys rather than Spain? Certainly not in the east of England that’s for sure. Paul, I like your old lady and hens. Good pencil study. Nothing from me for a while. Of to the Peak District on hols soon so I’ll knuckle down then x

.They look really interesting Gillian like the tinted charcoal. I came across this on my old sketch pad not sure if I’ve posted it before, sorry if it’s a duplicate.
